I made a thread last night about how Firefox ran crappy so installed Google Chrome instead after the recommendations.

Anyway, noticed it was still a bit choppy so i decided to just format the laptop back to factory settings.

Saved everything that needed saving to my external hard drive, well i thought i got everything.....

Turns out i have lost 2 doc files that my girlfriend has been working on for 6 weeks that needs to be handed in for tomorrow.

There is 8 doc files but 2 of them are only shortcuts for some reason. I didn't notice this and just assumed they was all the proper files. These doc files was done in Microsoft word 2010.

I am now doing a data recovery hoping i can find these files, which looks like it is going to take till the morning to even process. Once i do get on there, do you guys know where i would be able to find the 2 proper doc files for this? I will literally be a dead man if i cannot find these files. Feel proper guilty lol as i know how many hours she has put into these.

The 2 docs that are only shortcut are the 2 biggest docs out of the 8 aswell. About 15hours of work have gone into the 2.

Any ideas guys. Or should i just pack my bags and jet off to another country before i end up as a victim on a CI program???

What folder did she have them saved to?

e: Also, man up and deflect the blame. If these files were oh-so important she would have had hot copies on removable media and the cloud, right? :p

You're in deep ****. I doubt you'll get them back to be honest.

Thanks mate. Will sleep better tonight.

'Sarahs work files' Assuming she had saved them all to that. If there is a shortcut, surely there should be a file somewhere on there for the shortcut to go to?

I am a master at deflecting the blame. I couldn't on this though lol

Sorry. There's a slim chance and I'm hoping that chance is in your favour. But I'm yet to see one of these programs get anything you're after unless it's a very small hard drive. Is it a teacher set end date or a course end date, if it's the former if she can convince the tutor to get an extension then perhaps you could help her and get her on side.

It is a course end date.

I have hope i can find it.

Did i mention it is also her birthday today? Think ill get boyfriend of the year award?

The ****** muppet as just remembered that she saved them 2 files to her flash stick.

Reason why they are only shortcuts in that file....

Can't stop shaking my head at how much of a complete nobhead she is.

Shush Hyburnate. :p

I've used HDD recovery tools successfully several times in the past for recovering photographs and other such things, but then again I have also had times where I have been un-successful. If you format a drive it just erases the location references of the data on the platters, meaning that the files are still there but the HDD is treating the areas where the files are as blank space.

So long as you haven't written over the sector which the file was saved on it should still be there.

Unfortunately if the process involved you formatting the drive and then writing a new OS onto it there is a chance that the sector has been over-written with new data, which would make the files far more difficult to recover. (I believe it is still technically possible, though I couldn't tell you how to do it)

All I can do is cross my fingers and toes for you mate.

*edit* WOW... Hah :p

Well, I can just sense the relief radiating from you!

Don't let her forget this. ;)

O I do lol. She was just going through them knowing I formatted the lappy. Seen that she couldn't get into 2 of them and just looked at me and went quiet, then the tears come

Blame deflection was impossible by this time unless you are the black belt super ninja warrior at lying :p

She's not the "knob head" here. You took it upon yourself to format and restore, and not taking care with your backing up. It was all in your hands, and your fault.

Unless of course the files weren't there to back up in the first place. Which they weren't.

Why were you messing around with something that wasn't yours to be messing around with? and formatting someone else's PC, did she know you were going todo this before hand?
