I am looking at a 980 GTX but..

A stock cpu will hold a powerful card like a 980 back a bit. Less so on a 970. The 970 is also much better value for money tbh.
 
If your planning on upgrading your cpu and cash is no issue get a 980. The power is always there and you can sli as and when you need.

But as of now you won't use full power so there's not much point
