Bought a 'Netgear RP614' jobbie and some cables... Easy I though. Whack the cables in, turn on and go... Yeah greattttt...
Got it all installed and stuff... Switched it on on PC1... Awesome, works fine... Got to PC2 (Never been on the internet before) and the internet worked, but took a minuite to load a page... Slooooow... I'm on 1mb and the other PC was idle... Then... Some website popped up about with the URL something 'music' and it said page cannot be displayed... The internet went totally dead on that computer... Now it comes back now and again but is deadly slow...
Basically I want to know how to set it up all nice and fast and be able to share stuff... I hate network stuff :(

Cheers,
Ash

if it pops stuff up you probly have contracted some spyware. This happens if your PC has no internet based protection as would be ok with not being on the net. As soon as you connect a non SP2/firewalled PC to the net, bang spyware viruses flood in. Run scans and see what happens.

But why would that stop me accessing the internet totally at times?
It's really starting to **** me off now...
I can't change the windows firewall settings because it's not part of the group policy or something :/

hmmm, you need an admin account. did you follow the instructions or use the CD?

I used the CD... It installed the router... Then got to 'connecting to the internet' and went blank... So though ****************, I'll do it the advanced way... So I tried to connect to the router through the adress it gives... Didn't work... Thought hmmmm... Hooked it up to the other PC and it all went fine, all worked... So I assumed that was it... But I plugged the other one back in and it hardly ever connects and when it does its soooo slow...

I'm pretty sure I have an admin account. I'm the only user...

Man, out of all the things I installed today this should be the easiest :/ My X-fi was meant to be hard but that took 5 minutes...

I can't find anything that looks wrong... It's so annoying... All the TCP/IP stuff is set right... I reflashed the router to the lates firmware... Tried different network slots... What could be wrong?

That's hardware lol. Now you've entered the whacky world of networking nothing is simple.

So anyone know how to troubleshoot it? There's nothing on the CD... Which is pretty poor...

Jusus christ...
Just got off the phone with Netgear...

We pinged all sites and that and it worked, so he decided it must be IE...

Apparantly I'll 'need to contact myself' since I build the machine... What *** hell?

Argh... How can IE be messed up when I havn't used it before?!

Well... Found out that I have about fifty thousand pieces of spyware... After connecting to the internet for 1 minuite with no firewall... Awesome... Absolute losers, who the hell does stuff like that... *ARGH*

It sounds as though you've connected a machine to the internet, without any security patches or firewall installed.

Install XP without it connected to the network, install a firewall (Sygate, ideally), download and install Windows SP2, and run Windows Update.

Whereabouts in Teeside are you? I don't mind helping you out.
