I believe I know what has gone wrong?

During a rebuild at the weekend, my computer failed to post, well it did partially reach the post screen once and since then nothing.

I carefully checked all the usual, PSU output, replaced the ram in the slots singly and in combination, all connections to power etc.

It appears that nothing in the upper right quadrant of the motherboard (CrossHair V formula) is working.

* Ram slots,
* MemOK button,
* MemOK LED

The LED's adjacent to the power switch flash red for a memory issue. Then go out. The bottom start and reset buttons on the board light up but do not work positively. I have reset the CMOS jumper without effect.

The PSU is showing normal wattage, a steady 100w when the system is on. Typical for the system with an FX9590/HD7870 at idle. I have tested the output with a PSU tester and multimeter.

Anyway I have stripped the PC down and have sourced an ASROCK motherboard for testing on the remaining components. Touch wood, the CPU, GPU and RAM are OK. It is a bit late to be spending a lot on AM3+ and DDR3.

I will post the results but it appears that the Crosshair has died, it has worked hard but is now replaced. It has gone to Ebay heaven for parts, not working.

I agree that it looks like a board failure. It might be worth having a spare PSU on hand just in case you still get problems after switching out the board.

Which Asrock board is it?

It is a 970A-G/3.1. A bit of a gamble and spur of the moment, I have little knowledge of the board, I just need something to test the hardware and last until October at least, until the next planned upgrade. I did not want to lay out too much cash or buy used at this time. I'm not planning to OC for a while anyway.

Current spec, FX9590, XFX HD7870, 16Gb assorted DDR3, several SSD drives.

If it was the board, and the replacement is a little flaky, I will probably underclock it slightly

Yes I have a spare PSU.

That board does officially support the 9590, but it could get warm - TBH any board does when you put in a 9590. It does however have a decent sized VRM heatsink.

My main reason for asking was that a lot of boards don't support that CPU.

I guessed :D Most of my fan effort is concentrated on the top rear of the case extracting heat.

It was the motherboard failing and yes the Asrock 970A-G/3.1 does work with the FX9590.

Replaced it last night and all is good.
