I've been running a hp microserver from a usb key using this:

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

I've made and saved lots of changes as I've gone along and it's all worked perfectly. however, due to an improper shutdown (I'm stupid) it didn't boot up again properly, and just sat unable to find a boot device. My clever attempt to fix it (fsck'ing the key using a VM ware ubuntu install) only made it worse, so I think I've trashed that part of it.

However, all the data seems to be there, so I'm hoping I can just copy out where my settings were stored, wipe the stick, and copy it back over. However where *is* my data in one of these setups? I'm guessing I really just need my filesystem to get all my conf files etc.

is /casper/filesystem.squashfs going to be what I need? I'm trying to open it now to work it out. I'm sure not long after I post this I'll know one way or t'other. However, what I won't know straight away is if I'm going down the right path!

Anyone had any experience with running from usb keys with persistance, your input is appreciated!
