I'm wanting to make some home brew root beer, but finding it very hard to find any ingredients in the uk. (why is it even if you select Uk, most hits in yahoo and google are in the US?).

Safrole-Free Sassafras Extract
licorice root (again ideally not extract)
Wintergreen leaves (again ideally not extract)
Hoja santa it's a type of herb

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ideally just leaves but for that price if it.s a medium sized plant can just strip the leafs off.

yeah the only place I have found the sassafras is ebay, but silly postage charge from America.

Many thanks for the help.

Edit properly wont use Hoja Santa anyaway, just found it contains Safrole oil as well and isn't in all the root beer recipes I've found. So probably best to leave that one out.

I don't think you'll get Mexican Pepperleaf outside of South America. I think it's a carcenogen similar to safrole.

The taste is apparently like a mild mix of Anise, Nutmeg and Pepper.

Chinese Tzumu is similar the Brazilian Sassafras and might be easier to find or be cheaper at a Chinese supermarket.

Thanks guys think I'll just have to stump up the postage on that one.

What I want to know is why Safrole is still banned, as modern studies has shown humans don't metabolise it the same as cows(original study that FDA and Europe banned it on) and as such we don't create the carcinogenic metabolites.

Probably because you can use it to make MDMA

Was the 'Sassafras Root Bark Herbal Tincture 100ml' from '
http://www.indigo-herbs.co.uk/acatal...fficinale.html' no use?

Safrole is a key component in making MDMA (ecstasy) so imagine that's the reason.
"It is a precursor in the synthesis of the insecticide synergist piperonyl butoxide and the recreational drug MDMA ("Ecstasy.")"

The root or root bark is used to make tea, although most commercial "sassafras teas" are now artificially flavored as a result of the FDA ban (see below). A yellow dye is obtained from the wood. The shoots were used to make root beer, a traditional soft drink beverage carbonated with yeast, which owed its characteristic odor and flavor to the sassafras extract. Most commercial root beers have replaced the sassafras extract with methyl salicylate, the ester found in wintergreen and black birch (Betula lenta) bark. A safrole-free sassafras extract is now available for flavoring.

Have you considered using Methyl Salicylate instead? Or even buy a Sassafras tree?

6 uk stockists of Methyl Salicylate

Oh and here's 3 uk sellers of Sassafras oil
