well i have been thinking about the eee-pc for a while and the new one with the 8.9" screen and 20 gig ssd looks very tempting, i would put ubuntu on it and use it on the go and friends houses as well as a portable dvd player
but is it worth the £300+ price tag?

i dont think the eeepc has an optical drive ,so you will have to carry a external drive to use it as a DVD player.

i personally think they're pretty useless and are overpriced for the specification, you can get a full size laptop 15.4" lcd, 80 gig hd 1gb ram celeron 1.86ghz for £299 which is way more capable and has dvd rw. It all depends what you want to do with it but i think they are very limited and basically a nerd gadget.

Dont knock it till you've tried one, the shere size is and what you get for your money is worth it. Plus i'm posting this whilst layed in bed with it one my chest and its pretty comfy.

I've found it very useful over the 5 days i've owned one, only shame is the battery life on the 900 series.

Yes you can get a cheaper higher spec laptop, but thats not the point !

But that would weigh 3 times as much and be twice as big.

had a play with one of these in work. Not a fan of the linux distro they have on it but apart from that its pretty sweet.....apart from the lack of optical.

I think you've missed the point of the EEE-PC entirely?

It's supposed to be a low speced machine used for web browsing, emails and basic office work.

They're aiming to set a new standard in portability for laptops as well. Smaller, lighter, quieter, cooler and other words that end in er.

they're far from being useless and you're comparing apples to oranges, the eeepc is great on the go and for traveling unlike a laptop which you have to lug around.

yeh you can get a higher spec'd laptop for around the same price but you're missing the point entirely.

the lower battery life on the 900 is crap however...they should be extending it not reducing :(

For what they are they are overpriced but that's because of the lack of competition. I want and have use for an eeePC or something similar but i'm waiting till Dell etc. release there's ;)
