windows update has been trying to update since 2023 it seems and failing. it was trying to download 23H2, and after download and fail, and download and fail, and download and fail, i searched what to do to fix and again after many attempts and restarts, it now tries to update to 25H2, but this still also fails. i've used windows installation tool, failed. windows update, fails. windows media creation tool, wont even run.

eacch time is different. it sometimes fails within windows update, but more often now it's downloading it all, restarting my pc, taking an age to do the upgrade, and then eventualy restarts saying "undoing changes made" and then i need to start all over again.

sometimes the upgrade process fails at 27%, the other night it ran for what must have been more then 15 hours as i went to bed at 1.30am with the upgrade at 27%, wake up with it at 88% percent, came home and it was undoing changes.

what can i do?

Run whynotwin11 and post a screenshot of the result
i never understand github.

i click your link, on the right side i see latest version 2.7, so i click this. and then i'm on a page that i cannot find a way to download/run code

Ok so I'd expect the computer to be able to install the latest windows 11.

What stands out to me is the length of time it's taking to run. Indicates something's borked.

It's unclear whether you were always trying an in-place update or whether you've already tried a clean install.

If you haven't already tried a clean install that would be my next step.

Obvs there's hassle like taking backups and reinstalling everything to plan for before you begin.

I'd rather avoid clean install for now just because I don't have the time currently to fix any issues that may occur as the pc is used for work
Do you have a spare drive? If so unplug what drive you have that's in and install a fresh and that will then prove compatibility etc, can then just unplug and be good to go again

No I don't.

I'm currently trying to update using the windows 11 iso. Quickly got to 90 percent but now it's been stuck there for ages. This is while the pc is usable still, unlike the other times where it's not loaded windows yet while doing the update.

I just understand why it keeps failing every different way.

I know 24H2 had blocks in place if certain software was installed or anti cheat as it was causing issues.

Wonder if updating from a downloaded .iso and keeping files would work?

The most successful method to install version 25H2 is to use the Windows 11 ISO.

Please ensure you download the ISO in the same language as you use for the Windows UI, follow the steps, this is then not like re-installing Windows, it is just like an update and your personal files, settings and installed software will not be affected.

Click this link:

https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

to download the Windows 11 ISO

When the ISO file completes downloading

Disconnect from the Internet

Disconnect all external devices with the exception of a mouse or keyboard.

Temporarily disable any 3rd party Anti-virus you may have installed

Then, in Windows File Explorer, double click the ISO and then run Setup.exe and select the Install option.

Very Important - ensure you select the option to keep your files and apps.

If its used for work
Would suggest make an image
Backup
Before the failed updates do something
That makes it unbootable

You've probably already spent
More time Trying to fix it
Than doing the clean install
Would take you anyway

I'm trying that now. Currently after 5 hours I'm at the 88 percent bit it got to last time when it had a screen like this.

Makes me think whatveer it is doing at 88 percent, that's the issue
5 hours!? Something definitely wrong - it was less then an hour when we tried at work
