basically i have a 1950xt which runs everything except bf2 dcon maxed and oblivion with hdr on.

i have 500 to spend but i only play bf2 dcon / farcry sometimes, waiting for quake wars / halo 3 / crysis.

so is it worth getting a "shader optimised" 2900xt over a 8800 because these future games are shader based ?

if not, is it really worth getting a gtx over a 640mb gts ?

my 22" widescreen comes soon and im not sure if the x1950xt will run it maxed out ?

If you have a £500 budget then definately go for the GTX. However, if you're only going to be playing BF2 and oblivion then your 1950xt should do the job fine for now.

Its very likely that even the GTX won't be able to run Crysis at high settings smoothly so it might be worth holding on to your current card and getting a DX10 card when 1. There are actually some DX10 games out, and 2. when we have some cards out that are proven to be able to run DX10 games at decent settings.

if you want a good card to last untill more cards are out then the cheapest.. Caugh 8800GTS.. will do fine,
and by the time better and better cards are out sell it and you will of saved up enough money again if you dont spend what you make over the next god knows how long..

Or if you want you can get a 2900XT or a GTX
choice is yours, and i made a choice of the 2900XT
Why... you may ask? Because it felt like the right thing to do

Wait until you get monitor then you can make you mind up, the x1950xt still a good card maybe if you can wait for the refreash when crysis is out,i only got a 8800 320 because my x800xl needed to be replaced.
If not go for the GTX as you got 500 to spend but if you can wait until next refreash you might get more of a idea what card does what in dx10 games and crysis i can see me upgrading mine as i think the 320 will struggle a bit.

The 640mb 8800GTS's have started to come down in price and would offer a bit more legs on your 22" than the 320mb as new games come out.
That said you may find that your X1950XT gives you playable frames until DX10 games are released and ATI/Nvidia produce cards they can actually test properly on DX10 games
