Having trouble with it again.

First off, I got Ubuntu working in the end.

Im using the instructions that rich stole from somewhere, and I'm not sure if it shows you how to install as a service?

Now when I type

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

into the terminal, I get the error

E: Couldn't find package ia32-libs

Is this something I need to download or what?

I think having an SMP Problems thread might be useful. It would stop all these "I can't get smp working" threads lol :D

Have you checked whether internet access is working in the VM Host?

I'm a Linux newbie as well, but I suspect this application will check on the internet for the package to be installed.

Try opening Firefox and browse to this forum or Google. If this doesn't work, then you will have to play with the network settings in VM to get this working first.

Hope this helps

hmmm strange - all I needed to do was put that into the terminal and it downloaded and installed it automatically

sorry I don't know enough Linux to even know where to start on that :(

edit: From having a quick google on the error message and first thing I found suggests that you might have installed a 32-bit version of Ubuntu rather than a 64-bit version :o

Ok, Having problems compiling FahMon.

I followed the instructions here , but when I run scon I get the following error.

Code:
scons: Reading SConscript files ...
scons: done reading SConscript files.
scons: Building targets ...
-DGTK_NO_CHECK_CASTS -D__WXGTK__ -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -D_LARGE_FILES -DNO_GCC_PRAGMA -pthread -O2 -D_FAHMON_LINUX_ -Wall -Wno-strict-aliasing -I/usr/lib/wx/include/gtk2-unicode-release-2.6 -I/usr/include/wx-2.6 -I/home/mark/FahMon/include -c -o aboutDialog.o aboutDialog.cpp
sh: Illegal option -D
scons: *** [aboutDialog.o] Error 2
scons: building terminated because of errors.

Why can't anything in Linux ever be simple.

Some one please post a single message with all the relavants downloads - this searching through multipul threads is doing my head in.

I need everything as still only have dial up at home (pesky modem still not arrived  ) so would like to get everything on my Ipod and take it home with me tonight. (have ubuntu on cd already)

If possable a download site link inc complete file name (not shortened in any way - some of us are windows slackers)
with a link to a guide under it (if possable)

walkthrough Guide here

Ubuntu here chose 64-bit pc (AMD64) desktop CD - File download name ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-amd64.iso
Burn copy onto CD Guide via wiki here h t t p://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Edgy

VMware server - chose VMware Server for Windows Operating Systems here
- File download name VMware-server-installer-1.0.1-29996.exe

Edit: Added a few more links (some one please confirm) but looks as if I'll need bb active to finish the instalation without waiting hours. :(

I'm glad you've got the SMP running.
Welcome to the club with FahMon:(
Several of us have the smae problem & don't know how to fix it.
I have redownloaded it. Got a precompiled folder from Billy the Impaler & still same error 2 with scons I'm getting illegal option -G

I think it is getting better but showing my age it is like Windows 3.1 & the nightmare of DOS either MS or PC.

I tried a google but without luck. Someone suggested Wine with Windows version of FAhMon but as I'm using 64bit & Wine only works in 32bit at present, I couldn't get the hack to work as I don't think Wine installed fully.
So I'm reduced to looking at the projects page to find out credit & a calculator to figure out run times:eek:

If you find a solution please let us know!

See, although windows 3.1 and dos BITD were a pain, I don't think I ever had a problem with them that made me want to give up.

But every time I do something in Linux, I get a problem, spend ridiculous amounts of time trying to solve it, and then go back to windows. :D

Its true that I do prefer windows, but that's probably because i've been using it for years.

But i'm not the type of person who will give up at the slightest problem.

I've been using various flavours of linux for the past 5 years or so, and I'd like to think I have a good grasp on using command line, but even so, sometimes it can be so confusing that it makes you give up the will to keep on trying.

Sounds familiar :o but then, I only got into computers about 6 years ago so I've never really had any reason to bugger about with the command line.

I see little reason (apart from SMP goodness) why someone such as myself would need to faff about with Linux when I know my way round Windows reasonably well. I know Linux is free and can see the benefits there but if I struggle with it and can afford Windows, then I see no reason to make life difficult for myself.

Stan :)

No surprise. SMP isn't working. There are four instances yet none of them are taking any cpu time.

This is what the log says:

It just repeats the autosend bit.

Any ideas?

How did you install the SMP client?

If you use finstall then it will automatically create the service for you during the install.

Go get the latest version of finstall, save it somewhere then in a Terminal Window change directory to where you saved it and run ./finstall smp

It will ask you a couple of questions and then display the usual config settings [username, team etc]. Once you have entered the details it goes away and does it's thing.

I would suggest nuking your current installed client before using finstall.

sudo rm -rf path/to/current/folding/client

That will delete the whole folder and its contents forever - so make sure you get the correct path :p

As for the issue with FahMon I too have an issue with installing it. I gave up long ago and now use the Windows version using WINE. I have found and edited a script that will do everything for you.

http://www5.spread-it.com/dl.php?id=66c865195e79a76403c649645577372c3496ec8b

Save that file to the Desktop [very important] and extract the file by right-clicking on it and opening with Archive Manager. Make sure the extracted file ends up on the Desktop.

Go into your Terminal Window and enter exactly the following:

Code:
cd ~/Desktop/wine
./wine

This will install Wine automagically. Next step is to grab yourself a copy of FahMon [windows version]. Now go to Applications->Wine->Programs->File Manager and in the new window that opens find the fahmon.exe file and double-click it. Fahmon should start running. You can now close the File Manager window.

Hope all this helps. Any problems just ask.

I've not been able to get to run as a service, but yeah, I have tried restarting the client.
If you've closed the client with ctrl+c and restarted it then you shouldn't be getting the "Previous termination...." message.

If you've not used ctrl+c then that'd probably do it :p
