Why?

They charge 9 pounds just to transfer money overseas

Can't see an easy way to get them to just call you back when you need them to

They charge you for using your debit card overseas

Can't think of a single thing which is good about them, anyone else?

Thinking of seeing what Nationwide are like, what you guys saying?

Their adverts are pretty good and a lot less annoying than others.

But yeah they suck, years back went overdrawn on my under 16 debit card account for a while and they closed my account.

With abbey now, good customer service and they're all in the UK so you can actually understand them easily.

HSBC have been VERY good to me over the years... patient, understanding, and always nice when I go in to see them.

Only problem I have is with this new "premier branch" system, as the regular branch in my town has been replaced by one of those and now you can't go in to see them at all unless you meet their "premier" criteria, which I think is absolutely disgusting personally.

Barclays are one of the best atm... I have just opened an account with them..

I hate them, had an account with them for 5 years and ive now changed after so many problems with them.

Almost all highstreet banks will charge for international payments unless you are a business / premier customer... this isnt HSBC being mean to you.

If you want better service over the phone, I suggest you join First Direct. I've been with them just over a year now, and they always bend over backwards to help :)

Abbey come/came last in some Watchdog bank thingy... I've said it many-a-time, but Natwest really have been good - dealing with fraud, lost cards, opening accounts there-and-then... I can't fault them, but it might just be that the Worthing & Chichester branches are good rather than the whole of Natwest being good.

Altogether now "they are a bank and not a not-for-profit organisation".

Some people think of a bank as a free service. It's not. It's there to make money. Therefore, when you borrow their money without their consent, you are liable for charges. Similarly for sending money overseas, I presume it costs them money so why should they foot the bill for your transaction?

I think HSBC are fantastic, I opened a business account with them for my import business and sending money overseas etc has been brilliant, I also opened an account overseas where my suppliers are so doing business has never been easier. I went to open a personal account with them however and i got the whole "computer says no" thing and they overrid it which I thought was beyond the call of duty so thumbs up from me.

HSBC have been sound for me. Some nut withdrew some money abroad from my card, went into bank, told them that it wasn't me, showed ID and statements and they cancelled my card and sent me a new one within days. Really friendly.

I would, however, rather not have to use their in-branch telephones every time I have to do something like this. But that's rather immaterial.
