Ok folks.. help me decide..

About me:

19, 1 Years NCB, Licence for 1 Year.

I want:

Hatch/Saloon... not particularly bothered
Reasonable insurance, for a Male my age.
Willing to look at anything, but I think the newer the better, I dont want to buy brand new...
Reasonable fuel economy, I do a trek of 30m a day when im working. Mini gives about 38mpg, so more would be a bonus.

I'm willing to spend upto 10k, might stretch to a little more, but I want this to be inclusive of insurance.

Gonna be putting the Mini up for sale in a couple of months.. and I want something with a little more substance.. so fire away :)

Considering an R56 Cooper atm, but im really not sure!

what are you reasons for swapping? what does your current mini not do that a newer mini would do?

Well my one is that.. its a ONE, basic 90bhp model, it has quite a few extras that will help its re-sale value, but really im just genuinley after something different..

As for the R56.. im only considering it.. its not really a lot on the one.. but thats why im open to suggestions.

R56 is the newer shape Mini... the fatter one with the chunkier headlights..

ok, and what is the power output of an R56 cooper then? I seem to remember that the cooper has the same engine as the ONE, just with some funky ECU work, about 20bhp more?
If that is the case then it's basically not going to offer you anything more than your existing one, hence its seem like a crappy idea to me.

Thats pretty much correct.. I said it was on the list only because I liked the looks.. but I havnt had a lot of cars.. hence why im asking for help..

My sisters bf has recently had a new shape Golf.. I dont think i'd get insured on a GT, but what about the 1600 ones?

The 182 I think I would struggle with insurance.. but I do like them..

Same thing, it's still borrowed cash. Why not reduce budget to give you more flexibility every month? You keep saying in GD threads how you always go into your overdraft - is another £10k car really a good idea?

You do have a point...

So what do you suggest? I have a little more insurance flexibility.. but I really dont know what I should be looking at..

Spend £5k on something cool and chuckable. You could get a Clio 172 perhaps? Not sure what your tastes are. Loads of great cars for £5k.

Stretch to £6k and you could be in an early Mini Cooper.

And be loads better off every month.

I will admit I do like the 172s, I learned in a Clio and really enjoyed driving it..

Okay, so lets say 5, 6k at a stretch..

The only thing I really worry about is insurance.. Anything below 1.5k F/C is reasonable. I have a WS11 Post-Code which isnt a particularly bad code but its not brilliant either..

If only.. they're another car I really like too.. I went off the idea of the newer Civic once I had seen a few nice examples of those..

Insurance is reasonable on a Civic Type S.. just a bit less what im paying for the Mini.. so I think I will deffinatley have a look at those.. and I cant even get a quote on the 172..

Only problem is it looks like the list price is around 7k -Ish theres a nice 05 one in Black

I also find myself being tempted by the 1.6 Clio, theres a really nice black one with a lot more gubbins than even my Mini has for £6,000..

How do the older shape Clios rate with reliability, because i've always been under the pre-conseption that French = bad...

Ok, i've made a shortlist for so far..

Top of the shop is a VW Golf FSI..
Honda Civic S (The one just pre the new shape)
Renault Clio (Perhaps the 1.6 Petrol, or 1.7 Diesel - As much as I would like a 1 7/8 2I cant insure them yet sadly.

As for the Skodas, again I dont think im gonna be able to insure them.

Focus.. im not to keen on the design to be honest, same goes with all fords..
