I have a friend who is a semi-professional music journalist and as far as I can tell he does very well out of it (travelling around Europe to review festivals, interview bands etc). Anyway, he recently posted this on his facebook, which is similar to a lot of music he seems to post / like.

I think I like most music (I concede I tend to have a preference against recorded jazz), but I really don't get it at all. What genre even is it? The melodies are so threadbare they barely count at all. Honestly, it's just horrible to me. Explain, OCUK :p

I don't like it.

It sounds like badly produced Fly Lo.

But - it creates an interesting vibe, almost induces a trance like state.

I would hazard that this music is more about timing, rhythm and vibe rather than creating nice melodies and chordal structures over 4/4.

When you think about it, we're fairly indoctrinated in our society by the predominately Western 4/4 and 12-tone melodic content. Beyond the odd 'sound effect' flourishment, anything that strives outside of this basis begins to sound less like music and more like noise to 'us'. But imagine being born and raised in a culture which hasn't adopted 4/4 and 12 tone. Instead they've adopted something like above. That would then become your 4/4 and 12-tone.

Edit:- in before someone says the above is in 4/4.

Sounds like a not as good Four Tet to me. When the vocal / rhodes sample comes in it's not too bad, all a bit dull though.

No idea on genre, I don't usually bother with them :p

As bad as it is, I still listened to it a lot longer than I have ever done to any (c)Rap music.

It's what people who can't play a musical instrument "compose" on their pc using fruityloops and samples.

I don't know what I'm even listening to, I wanted to punch my computer after playing that abomination

[Edit] Video in the OP, not the one above

I miss the times when rap told stories or had political motives.

deep and meaningful rap is just about extinct to much money and bling rubbish.

represent the people not your wealth

Yep, pretty much all the rap music i listen to is from the 90's when it was much better!

There's plenty of rap out there doing it. But it doesn't sell. People still doing small clubs and then selling tapes out their car boot. Self releasing on the internet is probably the most cost effective way though. Between Bandcamp, SoundCloud and Youtube, there's plenty of good hip hop and rap to find.

Exactly right!

Looks like how I used to dance in clubs :D (and wondered why I never got any chicks lol).

That is certainly not music to listen.
