i despise STEAM!

its getting to be over 50% of the time i fail to login to steam and play the games i paid for!

its not just around the sales, its all the time.

i have spent a long time searching for the exe files to lauch directly but cannot find some of them, i have validation problems, and this is really getting on my **** now.

those under performing consoles that have been gathering dust since i started PC gaming is look very tempting again.

the sales are amazing! if only i could play the games after i have bought them

and like i said, no over clock, i dont need it.

i have no problems with any other internet access.

what is memtest, is that to test ram or HDD test, will check bios clock now

No issues here, sounds like your issues are to do with either your connection or your computer.

sounds pretty reasonable to me

thanks for all your input chaps, i have lots to try now.

what does the ClientRegistry.blob do?

ISP is Sky, router is a 5 year old netgear one (cant remeber the model)

if it was the firewall, then would i not have constant problems rather than intermittant problems.

the only anti virus i run is microsofts free essentials program.

i believe i am not logged in as an administrator, as i often get messages saying i neeed admistrative rights when installing other programs (im fairly new to win7 so not sure how to change this).

and if it comes to it, what are my chances of re installing steam and pasting the games back without any problems?

i was playing portal just before a crash, then could not open steam, so i thought i would just run the portal exe file, but could not find it??? i performed a seacrh got lots of hits for portal 2, and a few folders for portal, but no exe.... any idea what it is called?

cheers

Only ever had 1 problem with Steam in the past not working, but I dont think it was Steam at fault anyway, it was my old HDD cos other things were playing up too. Just reinstalled and since then Steam has worked perfect.

well i was running on a 6 month old SSD, but am now running on a 6 month old HDD, i have the same problems on both drives

Actually if you've have crashes run a disk check on the drive steam is on too, just to make sure you don't have corrupted files (right click on disk in My Computer, Properties, Tools, Error Checking).

will do.

ran memtest for the ram last night and all was good, ran a virus scan and all was good too.

i will try that lot tonight

what is steam guard?

another thing that i forgot to mention, when i verify integrity of game cache, it pretty much always fails (only had to do on ARMA2 and OA)

  • OP, go to your Steam folder and delete everything except the whole steamapps folder and Steam.exe (Application).
  • Now run Steam and let it rebuild itself.
  • Make sure that you've got Steam Guard enabled in Settings.
  • In Settings click on CHANGE... under Beta parcipation and choose Beta update.
  • Let the Steam install the latest build and restart.
  • Run any games you like and if you have any problems with the game, right click on it in Steam Library -> Properties -> Local Files -> Verify Integrity of Game Cache.
  • Use crap cleaning software like CCleaner to clear temporary files and registry on your PC.
  • Defragment your hard drive where you have Steam installed using Windows inbuilt tool.

i have started this process, just running steam after deleting files, steam is trying to update now, but is hanging around 4% now, i guess i can put that down to all the steam servers being busy

edit: it was struggling to update just before i deleted files
