Hi guys, I have just sold my 98 Astra for £1300 and so I am a lookout for a new car but I'm not sure what to get - I have £1.5-£2k to play with but I do quite a lot of long journeys - also I need cheap insurance as well. Do any of you guys have any ideas?

Cheers!

Matt

Fox has had a Xantia and a Mondeo - he seems to know quite a bit about Xsara's though too.

Nissan Primera.

Bland as hell but cheap, rock solid fairly good on fuel and fairly comfortable. I do 1400 miles a month in mine and average 37 MPG, it never has let me down. Insurance group 11/12 (I think).

Good point with the Xsara, if you do milage then possibly the 2.0HDi if you can get one in your budget. Good mpg and enough speed.

well, i've just done an ins quote for a 2.0 ghia x and it came out to be

Your quote
£1721.99

not cheap. i am going from a group 4 to a group 12 though so that may be why! but i am coming to the end of my first year of car insurance (its due in may) so maybe it could come down a bit...

Xsara will be cheaper to insure. Seems a bit daft spending £1700 on insurance when the car costs as much to buy.

try TPFT? Im assuming that quote is fully comp?

I never had a Xsara but I was on the verge of buying a 98 VTR 1.8 16v until I discovered Mondeo's.

So, obviously, I'd have a Mondeo over the VTR but it really does depend what sort of driver you are and what sort of things you value - they are different cars.

I'd not really look any further than a decent Mondy for this money really - reliable, cheap to run, ideally suited for long journeys but just as at home around town.

Shop around for the insurance.
