Current system is a i7 4470k/8gb corsair xms3 ddr3 / evga 980ti.

I am contemplating a new build based around the i7 7800X or 7700k, i don't know which yet.

I'm wanting a good all rounder for gaming and for video editing (4k) and photo editing.

I'm not sure my 4470k is cutting it anymore, it struggles when rendering video, but then, it could be that i only have 8gb ram. Is it worth just upgrading to 32gb DDR3, or should i just upgrade with RAM being so expensive at the moment.

If i build new, what motherboard would you go for for for the 7700k, and for the 7800X?
I won't be replacing my gfx card as i think that still has plenty of life in it yet.

That'll do for now. Thx

I wouldn't bother "upgrading" to the 7700k aside from a small clock boost there's very little improvement over the older i7s. The 8700k at least has 2 extra cores and 4 extra threads.
The AMD ryzen systems are really nice for video rendering a 1700 with its 8 cores 16 threads for under £300 is great value for money.

The 2 new HEDT platforms x299 with the skylake x processors and the AMD TR4 threadripper might be an option but both are fairly expensive.

Honestly I think the ram upgrade will definitely help, but as you say the price on ram is a little poop right now, still DDR3 is cheaper than DDR4, so that's something at least.

I would go 8700k over those 2 options (unless you're getting a great price on them):

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £759.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

I assume you already have a decent CPU cooler.

I'm in NZ now so no use using UK pricing lol. I had considered Ryzen but ive not looked much into it. Is it really up to taking on Intel these days, back in the days of Athlon i used to build AMD all the time but switched to Intel for my last 3 builds. I'll be honest though, I'm out of touch a bit these days with components hence why I ask.

32gb of corsair rgb ddr4 3200 is $649nz here (£375)
The 7800X (Not K) is $515. (£260). I havent researched motherboards for the 7800x yet though. I'll also look into ryzen performance with video / photo editing and gaming.

Thanks so far and keep the options coming :-)

Dont go for older gen like the above guys said. Your only proper upgrade would either be a ryzen or an 8700k. If your emphasis leans more towards gaming get a 8700k otherwise get a ryzen.

Personally I'd go for an 8700k since it will smash ryzen at single thread Games and I play slot of pubg. But I am happy with ryzen.

Well the i7 8700k ($649) is cheaper than the Ryzen 7 1800X ($685)

Hmmm, i still need to research.

How does this look?

Can you find 3000MHz+ for not much more? It isn't just the frequency, the timings on that kit are pretty woeful for a 2666MHz.

600P doesn't compare well with Samsung 960 EVO Polaris/Pro, again here if possible (given video and photo editing) improve on it. I'd make do with a 500GB if possible, in order to get the faster one.

It's a TN panel, great response time for gaming but not very good for video/photo editing. Would go with IPS for richer colours or if you like deeper blacks and excellent contrast then VA.

Thanks, will bear these points in mind and look again. The timings on the 3200mhz RAM aren't much better (16-18-18-36). I could look at the Gskill options though.

Hopefully this works...

Just had this exact system priced up here (except the psu is different (FSP Aurum 750w modular 80+ Gold). The rest of the components are exactly the same model...

How does that look? I've been quoted $2930NZ (About £1500).

I'm going for the above list with an Asus Strix 1080ti for an extra $1300 (£660). Should sort me out for a couple of years :D

I'm not sure about the 43" monitor though, think i'll hold out with my 4k AOC 28" for now and see what happens.
