Hey guys,

I was playing some bf4 last night and thought to myself, "why dont i get a i7 4790k" but im not sure why and if there is any point, i use my PC for gaming and thats it.

I game at 1920x1080 144hz but will upgrade the res when i see more 120/44hz versions to choose from.
This is my current spec
FX [email protected]
Asus crosshair v formula z
2x4gb 1600mhz xms3
Corsair H80i
MSI R9 290 gaming
OCZ vertex 2E 120GB
1tb hdd
500gb hdd
Antec true power 750w
CM storm trooper

Am i just getting a itch or is it worth doing?

Cheers

I wouldn't change now until you change GPU set up, I don't think you should have went to the FX8320 in the first place from the 1st Gen i5.

It really depends how much disposable income you have tbh.

I went from an FX6300 at 4.3ghz >4670k,but partially that was because i was able to sell my AMD mobo/cpu to a friend so i didnt have to splash so much cash down for the upgrade.

For me the jump was worthwhile but, slight framerate variance and stutter REALLY bugs me,and i would say the difference in a lot of games isnt that massive, but in some intels IPC made a world of difference(MMO's,Ubisoft ports ect)

From what you have to a 4790k is a pretty reasonable jump, but your lookin at about £350ish for a new mobo and cpu.Unless your getting bad/annoying performance in the games you play i'd say wait it out till next year and see what broadwell is like

You would be paying a lot for the performance jump you would be getting

Thats what i thought the only game that stutters is all ubisoft games, and skyrim is pretty bad tbh.

Im assuming my fx chip will be fine with new titles

Fx chips suffer in games that are only single/dual threaded

Skyrim is particularly bad on FX chips due to it only running two threads.

In theory Fx chips should be ok for a while as games that utilize more than 4 threads become more common.

It depends on the games you play, as said above. For most things, the 83xx series is fine, and gets better when things like mantle get involved. But for poorly threaded games then its not so great..

im in the same boat atm, i have a good mobo but a crappy cpu (fx8120), the mobo i have only takes AMD cpus, so i can either upgrade to a top AMD cpu for about £180-200 or buy a new mobo and get a good i5/i7 cpu. which would probably be around £300 for both. Do i do that and try to sell on my AMD stuff to balance out the difference? im going round in circles trying to decide. haha

Have you overclocked your CPU?Also what is your Mobo?

Its defiantly not worth spending £150-200 to get one of the 'top' AMD cpu's

Just get an 8320 and over clock it for much less money

It's not really worth it, but yeah if you've got the money and want to try something new then go for it. I think I'd only consider going for x99 from my set up when the prices have come down a bit.

I had an Fx 8320. And although it is a solid chip it performed it performed very well.

I upgraded to an I7 4790k on my custom loop and gave it a nice bump in clock speeds. The 8320 was pushing 5 Ghz the 4790k was at 4.3 Ghz I must say in battlefield 4.. I don't notice much between either chip. In other games that don't support the full 8 cores of amd's chip run faster on my I7 but each chip can give you steady fps so unless you want to squeeze every frame out then yeah..

Personally, I went off amd and blew a ton of money on the intel chip. I regret the price a little but i love it so it's worth it to me.

At this point there's no point in blowing more money on a new chip. As it's a lot more money to invest. Go with your heart. :P I picked intel for reliability and peace of mind when I push it hard. But Amd can be just as reliable just keep those temps down. :P

I've recently bought a 4790k and it's a fantastic CPU but I upgraded from a measly Phenom II 955. My old mobo wasn't compatible with FX chips, which meant that I would've had to buy a pretty dated AM3+ board and that kind of put me off going the AMD route again. That's why I went the whole hog and bought my first ever Intel which happened to be the most expensive one in the current mainstream line-up;p (I tried really hard to think up reasons to own one;p) If i had an 8320 back then, I wouldn't bother switching to Intel. It's a cracking little chip and should do just fine in the upcoming titles, including GTA V.

Went from amd phenom @4ghz oc to devils canyon.

And some good ddr3

In cpu bound games (looking at YOU ARMA3!) the difference was day and night!

And for other stuff, it just feels silky smooth

Im staying on devils canyon for over 5 years now i reckon

As other have said, I went from a 1090t x6 to a 4790k. Planetside 2 /metro:LL was vastly different. However on BF4 there is no difference to me what so ever. that's using mantle.

I think the 83xx is better than the 1090t from what i've read//seen, so your change might be less in PS2 and the like.

So if i dp decide to go back to intel, all i need is the 4970k and a motherboard, so say £350 for them, so it will cost me about £170 i would have thought of i sell my ROG board and FX chip to help fund it

Providing you are going to re-use the same cooler, yeah. May be a better idea to hold off until broadwell since those aren't going to be too far away? Unless you've got the upgrade bug like I had :D
