Maybe becuase I do a lot of cooking at home, I am no professional chef, but can knock up some quite good stuff. Also I think it doesn't help having a family of 4 with one older child basically an adult.

But with the odd exception, there is very little that I enjoy about it.

It's the cost more than anything. I could actually understand the enjoyment a bit better if you were single going out with mates etc, just having to pay for yourself. But if we go out, it's effectively 3 adults and one child, any form of pretty "standard" pub meal with drinks, that's already £100. Even Wetherspoons with a few drinks now £50. Anything fancier, forget it.

But not just that, almost without fail, the food you get I think I could have just made the same at home, for 20% (or less) of the cost. Maybe it's just as I live in the middle of nowhere and choices are limited but, any form of pub food, I can make better for cheaper. Any type of "chain" resturant are usually abysmal, I had a meal in a "Carluccio's" once in Peterborough and I had the seafood linguini, and no joke it was just some boiled seafood, on plain spaghetti with a very small amout of some sauce over the top, and was charged, what, £15 for that? Im sorry but if you find that kind of thing acceptable you need your head examined. But any of chose big chain places, are all pretty dire. Most indian/chinese/italian/etc restaurants and pretty dire. Amercian BBQ type places are ok, but expensive, again, I can do that at home.

Added to that, invariably they screw up something in your order, then you have to ask them to sort it out, which delays everything or makes things awkward as every one wants to be polite and wait for your (correct) food to turn up. It's awkard getting their attention for drinks, you have to wait, you have then try and hound them down to pay the bill, then often they try and add a "service charge" on top, and you have that further awkardness of saying no. Don't foget you are supposed to be paying for an "enjoyable experience".

I do not understand why people go out to a pub for a sunday roast. Making a roast isnt technically difficult in the slightest, and I have literally never had a roast dinner anywhere, I couldnt make better myself, and they NEVER give you enough gravy.

Anything fancier? No thanks, you pay a lot of money for a small portion, pretentious rubbish.

There is the odd exception, a few times many years ago there was a thai resturant in Peterborough and the food there was really good, and outside of what I could do myself, it closed down now unfortunately. I have been to a few Turkish places that basically give you a really posh kebab and are not usually too expensive, also pretty decent portions, although those are getting expensive these days.

But generally, no, it's not for me.

Absolutely. Being in the trade I can get a decent steak. The mrs can cook it to perfection and its "cheap".
But we still go out to eat steak... The meat may not be as good.. But theres no washing up and the mrs gets a night off.

For me, And I hope for my customers its more than just food.

See for me, on the rare occasion I do go out, the last thing I'd pick is steak.

Had steak a few times, in semi-nice places and once a posh hotel, and the quality of it was horrendous. I'm not complaining about how it was cooked either. A bad bit of steak is bad regardless of how you cook it.

I get consistently better steak in Tesco even the "standard range" and the finest or steak from my local butcher being even better, so I'm not buying the whole "you can just get unlucky" thing.

It can only leave me to believe that those places were getting their steak from questionable/cheap sources.

If I were going to go out and pay good money for a meal, at least get good ingredients, even if you have to pass a couple of quid of that to the customer, I'd rather pay it.

Actually jokes aside the best steak I ever had out was at a Wetherspoons funnily enough, I'd say about 25 years ago, in Southgate North London, ordered the surf n' turf, so the steak wasn't even the main focus I guess, but the bit that came with it was really good.

But I can get a steak from my butcher, whack it on a really hot BBQ and it's 10x better than any restaurant. Why would I pay someone else to do a worse job?

My local butcher is expensive, you're looking at £15 for a good fat ribeye

I tell you what, inspired by this thread I am going to go to my local butcher today and get some ribeye steaks and Ill let you know how much they are and approx weight.

I need to get some brisket anyway.

I bought a brisket (literally the whole thing) last year, I cant remember how much is was, I wana say about £70. I cut that up into family size portions (and cubed some for stews) but that brisket was really good quality. I'd cover in salt pepper, then that really cheap american mustard that comes in a squeezy bottle, put in on the bbq uncovered for about an hour maybe hour and a half, then wrapped up in tin foil, add some liquid (typically cola or soy/water mix) and keep cooking for about a 4 hour total cook time.

Absolutely melt in the mouth and moist, and the fat content gives it such a good flavour, I am not sure how much that would work our per portion, probably not much, and although seems like going off tangent, again, why would I go out and pay probably pay £20 just for one meal of that. I bet most places wouldn't even be cooking it over charcoal.

This is why when I watch travel programs (although I find him a bit cringey) the likes of Mark Weins etc when hes is places like South East Asia but also America. The quality of the food and cost in somewhere like Thailand just blows anything we have away, by a magnitude of 100. And even if you look at the US, some of the BBQ places where they have build their own smoker and specialise in BBQ, proper portions, not particularly expensive, soul food, you just don't seem to get there here.

Seems in the UK we are about "fine dining" which to me seems to be about everything but getting good food for a good price.

I understand the social aspect but I do that in other ways.

However for really specialty stuff (especially Asian cooking)

Yup I did mention this in my first post and agree here.

As an example, probably going back 10 years now but I worked in Cambridge for a short spell and in the market in the centre of Cambridge was a Thai Food Van "Birds" Thai Food Van I think, last time I checked it was still there.

Anyway, they did the usual pad thai etc on the menu, but after going a few times I noticed these Asian people eating bowls of various things.

So I asked them, turns out they do a "special" menu, which is one different thing each day, get what you're given, and they don't openly advertise it.

When I asked if I could have it, they even asked me if I was sure lol.

But it was a £5 and some of the things were really good, various broths, or sometimes fried fish, nothing like youd get at most places, sometimes it did have offal etc which I imagine is why they don't advertise it as most western people I guess would turn their noses up or complain. But these guys were just a family there cooking and the food was excellent, I went there pretty much every day.

Went out for lunch today on our anniversary, gastro pub or whatever.

Had Korean Chicken at £17.

Turns out, 2 dry half chicken breast with a bit of sauce slapped over, uncle Ben's rice, some chicken shop style deep fried chicken strips, again sauce slapped on and some kimchi.

I mean wtf?

The Mrs has 2 courses off their Christmas menu and tried to charge us a few quid over what it should be.

I don't go out for meals often and this is exactly why.

Would have rather had a curry and a drink included at Wetherspoons for £9.

Edit: Toby carvery or any such like tbh, why on earth do people rave about a Toby as if it's some amazing thing, it is (and in my experience any carvery type place) are frankly abysmal,

Agreed but...... I remember 2007/2008 I used to work in Borehamwood just on the outskirts on North London, there was a toby carvery up the road, and if you went at lunch it was something like £4.50, now at the price you can't complain, used to have that and a cheeky lunchtime pint of carlsberg for about £6.50.

I don't even want to know how much it is now.

tbh I think it's the world outside just generally getting *******

Yup I think it is.

TGI is pretty much the definition of chain restaurant that sells mostly ready made rubbish, it's like going to Wetherspoons and saying you could do better.

Yup, but unlike TGI Friday, Wetherspoons food is a bit cheaper, and they have good beer and their drinks are cheap.

TGI Friday have **** beer and it's expensive.

But yes, I get your point and do agree.
