Was thinking today over a glass of tea (ran out of mugs)..

Why does the Devil punish people who are evil?

Surely he'd embrace them and form an alliance to take over the universe?

Or is he partners with God - he hands out the punishments while God helps the good guys..

But then why all that teasing in the desert?

religion is ridiculous /thread

The devil and his followers were banished to Hell for daring to go to war against God. Maybe he has people who go to Hell tortured to mock God and show him the people he could not save, showing a weakness in God himself.

It's a good a reason as any.

That makes sense, actually. Considering God is supposed to be all-caring etc., it would be a true affront to him to see those he couldn't save ruthlessly tortured forever.

It doesn't make any sense as you are thinking of hell in the modern idea which has no basis in religious texts.

The theory goes that he rebelled against god with an army of rebel angels and tempts humanity to test their loyalty to god.

Devils in hell do not punish humans, they simply torture them because they are evil. Part of the punishment of hell is living in a world populated with evil beings. The devils themselves live in misery.

You can take or leave the belief if you want.

Well, I assume you'd know all about it considering your username. :p

I have no religious beliefs whatsoever, or anything beyond basic knowledge of religious texts, but for the "modern era", as you call it, idea of hell OriginalJonty's explanation is, as he says, as good as any for the question posed in the OP.

Out of interest, what exactly is the "original" idea of hell?

Yeah, I'm not well versed in Hell as depicted in religious texts. I mean the closest I've really read about it was when I read Paradise Lost by Milton but in that Milton, unintentionally, represents the Devil as an anti-hero while God can give no sound reasons for his actions.

Actually on Judgement Day the Devil wil be thrown into hell along with the rest of the people that'll go there.

It'll be God's own angels that will do the punishing of both the Devil and people

Considering God is also supposed to be all powerful then there would be no one he couldn't save. If hell exists, God created it and you will only end up their because he decided to send you there. So I am not sure "all-caring" is a good description. :D
