Interesting thought.. In october, nottingham city council had a 'careers day', they expected no more than about 1000 people to show up between 10am, and 4pm.. by 9:30am, there were approximately 10,000 people queuing almost half a mile in either direction of the building.
I'm not supporting this 'mike' fellows attitude, but it is safe to say, that at the moment, nottingham is not a good place to live if you are looking for a job.

That £65 pound a week costs us the taxpayer a lot more than that when you add all the "extras" he gets and administration on top of that!
If you are fit and on JSA it should be compulsory for you to do unpaid community work. N
Oh and the guy in the OP is committing benefit fraud as he is fit for work...

Do you really believe that their are enough jobs for everyone to work?
I believe that some people say there are no jobs and willingly discount being toilet cleaners or binmen or some other job which is perfectly viable on account of it not being something they want to do...yes.
Whether there are enough for everyone , I honestly couldnt say without the actual statistics, nor could anyone else on here. But I certainly know that we have loads of "crappy" jobs where I am, so I find it amusing when someone local to me says "there are no jobs here"

The current system is in no way fair at all, if I lose my job tomorrow, and dont get another I lose my house, I will receive no help what so ever it simply gets taken away, that with society is ok, yet if I was in a Council house and couldnt be arsed I would still have a roof over my head. If my boiler breaks it gets fixed when i can afford it, get in a Council house someone is out the same dau to repair it at no cost.
If they get benefits fine cap it, but they must pay rent at the going rate, repairs, Council tax like the rest of us.

We wouldn't want them, if they're not motivated by civilian courses they'll like army ones even less - even the army has moved on and wont physically force people to do something they refuse to do.
I read a local newspaper arcticle just last week that said a toilet cleaner job (part time and minimum wage) had over 600 applicants. Says something when you have a 1 in 600 chance of a part time minimum wage job

If it was up to me I would love to spend all day sitting on my bum at home playing with my little boy and watching my flat screen TV. Although saying that my TV is smaller than those who are on benefits.
The game needs to change, I totally agree that Food stamps are the way to go. I do not drink alcohol (1 year since my last beer) and have never smoked. Yet all those "job seekers" and benefit cheats are sitting there with a bigger TV, Sky, Free laptops (for the kids ofc, lol), a bigger house, free house updates (father in-laws house just had all its wiring re-done, etc) while I am struggling month to month.
Food/Utility stamps OR a 6 monthly assessment should be done. "Wait, you have been claiming benefits for 10 years yet have a £2k Motorbike, 50" TV, Sky, and a Brand new £15k car? We are obviously giving you too much lets see how you do on £35 a week."

Would be interesting to know who the 600 applicants were, thats a set of statistics I would be rather interested in.
Unfortunately, there are far more unemployed people than there are vacancies - and I'd much rather this guy continue not to have a job instead of taking a vacancy that somebody is willing and fighting to take.

That said, we can't just throw people out onto the street and expect everything to be fine because of it. How many of you have tried living on £65 a week?
What i don't understand is how somebody can seemingly do nothing with their life. Everybody has interests, hobbies, in a better system they would spend their lives working in those areas, but at current they'll still enjoy them to some extent. If somebody who doesn't have a job per se does something in these areas that benefits society then surely they should have support. Isn't that what 'big society' is? Oh wait...

Me too, the article didnt go into it in too much detail as i can remember (i think it was last tuesdays express and star), but it made me think I hope I dont lose my job as I probably wouldnt even get a job cleaning toilets
That's a shame. Not sure what the answer is then. All I can do is raise my kids not to be like this. Unfortunately I can only afford to raise 2 kids 'properly', whereas some of those on benefit churn out 5 or 6 and raise them badly. Next generation, my hard working kids will be outnumbered 3 to 1 (assuming the benefit kids follow in their parent(s) footsteps).

I bet his total package is a hell of a lot more than £65 a week, especially with kids involved.
Kids are the main "problem" as soon as benefits people are providng for kids they get a lot more, hence a single unemployed mum may as well stay there they are pretty much guaranteed a standard of living, hey not the greatest but not terrible.
Something akin to workhouses could well be the way to go. So some work which is genuine adding value to the community, but also some specific time looking for work, semi supervised.
So you go say 2-3 days to a set location, do some low/semi/un skilled work for the days but for at least 1-2 hours a day you spend time in a PC facility looking for vacancies making calls etc where a supervisor is there to make sure you actively are looking.
Put a creche there so the single mums can do their bit, and some comfy sofas for those with disabilities.

Everyone on benefits should be made to do some form of work, be it voluntary for charities, cleaning and tidings their parks and neighbourhoods, manning locally run creches etc etc. A large amount of people would be employed simply managing them. Councils could save a fortune on public maintenance costs etc etc.
Working to improve your community gives self worth and adds value to your area.
