But Steam VR keeps taking me to my dashboard thinking that I do? -And at the worst possible times

I play seated VR and I don't use the hand controllers. All the buttons on my wheel are mapped and work great for the sims I run. As far as I know I don't have any buttons mapped to "invite friends" and, if there is a button mapped to "Never mind. Take me back to the game." I certainly can't find it.

How do I disable this or bail when it happens?

Have you checked that the buttons you have mapped for racing don't correspond to any shortcuts if pressed together?

It has happened when I wasn't touching the wheel. Where do I see what buttons are mapped to what commands for steam VR?

I may have found a solution. There's a setting in steam VR under the dashboard section called "VR Dashboard on System Button". If you hover over it the description is "Allows the VR Dashboard to be summoned in response to a system button press." (Project Cars 2 has gaze control where staring at something too long is like clicking it with a mouse. I may have triggered it that way.)

Since I don't want to summon the dashboard....ever....I set it to "off" (default is on).

I have played a couple hours without issue now.
