lol, tried to do something clever with the title...

Well, after reading all the reviews and stuff and good things from mates I thought id give fear a punt.

Im not too happy with it really. The gfx arnt too good, its extremely boring and only shoot about 3 different enemies throughout and very, very easy.

Ok, so im playing 2 year old game here (2 years tommorow btw!) , so i know its going to be slightly dated but not this bad.

Have i missed something from this game?

Not saying its a complete arse of a game btw, some bits were ok, and i genuinly lept out of my skin at a few points - wish there was more of it really.

because it had very good graphics and atmosphere when it was released

that combined with decent ai made it into a benchmark game in it's time, all the new releases since have just been riding the wave of the pc original

The engine dated horribly, even at the time of release I thought Half Life 2 looked better.

Did you have Fear on maximum settings? It does look rubbish even with reduced down a bit. I set it to lowest- looked like Quake on my Voodoo1 !

When I first bought fear approx 12 months ago it ran like a dog on what I thought was a decent system. I was well pi$%$ed off with it. (i think its badley programmed and needs a very good graphics card)

I updated to a core 2 due (6600 comfortably clocked to 3.4ghz) and 8800gtx and have to sayy wow its an amazing experience. Yep its mainly indoors but sill loved the max pain type experience.

I alo played the sequel . I liked it but the end came as a surprise as I thought i was only 3/4 way thru it when the final cut scene came.

All I can say is ~I thought it was a cool game and you should give it a chance. BTW all the seetings I used were maxed and i was impressed how it looked. Better than Bioshock btw. Everyone said how amazing that was but to me it is too sluggish response wise with waht #~I clas as a top end pc rig

deks
ps nsorry for typing had too much wine and its late

oops i must6 be opissed 'i just noticed im in the console section! ~I was talking abouyt the pc version. !!! YOu are probably right if its oin the console, game pad and all :)

Night night and ignore me

Yeah maxed, it looked good in the cut scenes but the actual gameplay-graphics were really bland and meh for most of the game.

Fire effects were awful too. :p

Why has this been moved? Im guessing this was you nokkon....

*EDIT* Hmmmm, seems as though i didnt make myself clear - i played it on the 360. But i thought peeps may have guessed that id have played it on the ps3/xbox360 when i posted in the consoles section lol

I played F.E.A.R at launch and to run at high settings it needs 2GB Memory, I had to stop playing till I got 2GB as my 1GB was used so was the 1.5GB page file.

You could ofcoarse not play it so high..

Well i played this on the xbox, so it went as high as it could.

So your saying with a top notch pc, the gfx look pretty good with everything maxed?

It looks decent yes.

I thought the AI was very good but there's not enough variety in terms of environments, you spend several levels going through wellrendered but pretty samey office complexes. Contast this to, say, something like Chaser (a 4 year old game) which while graphically inferior is still better to look at in some ways simply due to the wide variety in level design. That may not make a lot of sense, but what I'm getting at is that FEAR has a good looking engine but it's not implemented that well in terms of design. Or to use an analogy, it's a bit like having a beautiful woman just lying there and telling you to get on with it, compared to an average looking lass who is really enthusiastic and in to you. The former may look better in a magazine but the latter is more fun to play with.

They also missed the boat in terms of characterisation - very little is done with your teammates, the story revolves a little too much around the main characters.
