I feel like I'm done... with badly optimised games

I'm sure I'm going to be blacklisting all badly optimised games in the future, no matter how good they apparently are.

Having recently come from an FX-8350 with a GTX 970 running at 1440p ultrawide, I'm familiar with what it feels like to have my hardware struggle. Despite upgrading, I unfortunately have several well-regarded games that are duds performance and optimisation wise. I've been massively turned off playing them and am keen not to ever add another one to my collection again.

To name a few of my worst offenders:
  • NieR:Automata
  • Final Fantasy XV
  • Skyrim / with the official Enderal mod on Steam
  • Dishonoured 2 - this one especially impressed me in that GSync wasn't smoothing out the frame rate despite it being on, so I read up about it and apparently the engine drops frames all by itself, not the monitor/GSync lol
What really struck me is when I upgraded to a Ryzen 7 2700 + GTX 1070 Ti, the performance of these games barely budged over my FX-8350 + GTX 970, whereas in other well-optimised games performance generally doubled or tripled.

I've also got a few games picked up on Steam cheap that I've not played like Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, which sound like they'll be performance duds from what I've heard, so I'm tempted to let them rot. Arma III was another one I recently tried and looks intriguing, but the performance was all over the place with hefty fps drops seemingly at random, which wasn't acceptable to me.

So, who feels the same and is boycotting dud-performing PC games?

This thread needs a bump, even if my conviction on the topic has possibly softened since massively downgrading my graphics card... maybe.

Biggest offender....pubg.
What steaming pile of poo of a game.

Many many hackers on there it compromises game play with some of the hacks they use had it on BF4 makes the server lag for one.
But it's SAD many can't get any skills says a lot for there life time list of aims and acheivements?
Was looking for some info on ironsight took me to a site aimjunkies saw the endless posts of jizz filled kiddies wanting hacks to play a free to play!

Why I wont buy games on release any longer. rather wait for the early adopters to be the beta testers, let most of the howler issues be sorted then pick it up 1/2 price or better 6 months later when it's better optimised.

Though just bought latest tomb raider and one of the areas where you pick up all the side missions (village area) the frame rates take a battering so a badly optimised area.

I'll only pay full price for a beta such as Squad or POst Scriptum as you take it on the understanding that the game will be developed from then on in. The big gaming companies just dont care anymore.

The only option within the next 10 years will be console gaming as its a one stop system and one set of hardware to optimise. With increases in performance at incredulous prices drip fed over the years extracting more profit.....oh I am the cynic!

I'm with you there! ^

I only buy games on release if I'm really interested in them and I can count the times I've done that in the last 5 years on one hand. Aside from the obvious benefits with patches and reduced prices... if we are honest with each other we all have a backlog of games we could be playing instead! :D..:o

The only early access game I don't regret getting into fairly close to release was Subnautica. I enjoyed my early access time with it and then when I finally got around to completing it years later it was excellent with a decent amount of polish.

We have to hope that Navi takes off in a big way in both the console and PC space. Not only does the market need a big shake up but the benefits to optimisation would be industry wide. Roll on E3 is all I can say.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are old enough that performance should be decent. Honestly as a big fan of the series they are well worth a play through so I personally wouldn't avoid them just on that performance basis alone. I will always have a soft spot for Fallout 3 as it was my introduction to the series but even I have to admit that New Vegas was the better game overall. Plus the modding scene for both is really solid.

Enderal isn't really badly optimised, it's just pushing the old Skyrim engine way way way beyond it's limits. I heard they are doing a port of the mod to Special Edition which should clean up performance greatly.

Finding the optimisation of PC games to be very lazy these days with ports. Its almost as though they can't be bothered and are expecting the demise of pc gaming altogther. Metro exodus whilst a nice looking game shows in some areas its just a console port textures are all over the place in parts. And if you buy a game day one you aren't suprised anymore by bugs. We have become the QA testers for them. Taking months even to fix some bugs. Bad times.

It is possible to beat the engine into some kind of working beyond its limits - with external programs that modify the way it uses memory and ENB to change the way some of the rendering stuff works, etc. you can get something reasonably decent out of it. Though I then beat it into a 25 FPS mess again by using a mod that goes nuts with grass density (it was holding a solid and responsive 60+ FPS before that though).

I was just about to give NieR:Automata a spin as well, as least I can lower my expectations slightly.

Install the FAR mod and Hi-res textures, will help quite a lot. But yeah, it's not a good port at all.

If it was any other typical game, I wouldn't bother, but for this I'm glad I did.

Nier hasn’t had a single patch or update of any sort since launch. Unforgivable in this day and age. I do have it but couldn’t get into it. I haven’t uninstalled it but Apex is taking up all my time atm.
