I built my system about 50 years ago. I saved up my money and built a system with with a 3570k and a hd7850.

Years (decades?) passed, and games kept playing fine @ 1080p, no real problems. I then sold my 7850 to a freind for £60 (good price then) and managed to pick up a nice custom cooled 7950 for about £110 (again, good price at the time)

So for more time, I keep playing my games @ 1080p, nothing really stuggles and things just work (apart from ffxiii, but thats a differnt story).

Now, after all this time, I feel like I should be ordering new hardware. but alas, the performance upgrades I can see avalible, dont seam to be all that much of an upgrade considering the cost :S

to add, I value a quiet system. as such, both my graphics card and cpu are undervolted, and only modestly overclocked @ 1.02GHz & 3.8GHz respectivly.

so, I ask you fellow hardware enthusiasts, what Should I do?

1 - nothing. Just enjoy your mostly more than reasonable performance @ 1080p.

2 - delid that 3570k and clock that mofo to the moon

3 - buy a 290/970 + 1440p/1600p monitor.

4 - wait for the new round of AMD cards, and buy a (insert price to performance king) and 1440p/1600p monitor (freesync? Damn, you caught me, I'm on the red team).

5 - dump girlfreind and buy a quad sli 980 system with a 5960X

I'm currently thinking about 2, followed by 4. Thoughts?

hmmm. In worle, so I dont get a lot of that sea air I'm afraid mate :D

I think so too. Still tempted to de-lid though.

1 and 4 with a hint of 2.

Over clock the CPU to around 4.3-4.5 ( with decent cooling its easy). OC your GPU too, I've seen them reach 1200 core, make sure you OC the memory too.. (That's where you see most the graphical gains).

Enjoy 1080p then in another decade (12-18 months) look at grabbing a new AMD card and monitor (1440p/1600p/4k, whatever's viable at the time).

Imo delliding will only gain you couple hundred MHz at most , and that's providing your not hitting the limits of your chips OC anyway . Only do it when your tempreture limited which you shouldn't be with anything below 4.6ish and a decent 240mm rad maybe even a little higher but am unsure with IVY bridge
