i get middle finger when overtaking?

ok iv noticed this happening to me a lot this year, when i overtake people especially on the dual carrigeway the person im overtaking has thier middle finger stuck up against thier window at me.

the overtaking is on dual carrige way and is perfectly safe.

what does this middle finger business mean and whats it all about??
 
It's just the guy admitting that you're number one. The only sensible response is to indicate to him through the rear window that he's number two.

I think it means **** you, unless its got a new meaning.
 
You must be doing something to annoy them, nobody else ever gets this on dual carriageways! It isnt even overtaking really is it, its going past them in the outside lane!

that doesnt make sense, iv for the finger from guys who are apparently over 50 from the looks of it, all wrinkled up and stuff.

one thing, the car i drive is old ass mk3 fiesta, and when i overtake i do redline it all the time. love the sound of revs....
what i have noticed is majority of these middle fingers are comming from drivers of new card, new as in 55 plate upwards.
 
It's probably the fact you're ragging the car to do it, especially in an old car, tends to make people think you're some kind of dick trying to race the world.

I get this too :) some people dont like getting passed by old sheds but insist on doing 65 or less on dual carriageways or motorways. I like the ones that immediately pass you afterwards, they always give me 'a look' so I just grin or laugh.
 
I used to get this a bit (when I was 19/20 drove a hot hatch I didn't really rag it tho)... generally from guys in their late 40s/50s in volvos and the likes - I think they are just feeling a bit inadequate.

Only one time I've given the finger back wss when I'd overtaken sensibly :P and was filtering in properly in a queue of traffic and the other guy seemed to see it as a chance to "get the last word" as it were and overtake dangerously into the queue - I didn't let him in and neither did the traffic behind who I think saw what happened.

The only time I could imagine I would do this to someone is if they are a smug person in a Prius... but then... they'd not get near me to overtake in the first place.
 
I was driving home from Wales in the t4 yesterday and had an unpleasant experience with some Northern, thuggish, no t-shirt wearing, tribal tattoo showing, golden Virginia smoking, bald headed chavtastic oaf. It was on the M1 around Leeds area and this retard in his tatty old vectra kept blocking me in, cutting me up and trying to make me crash basically!?

He pulled so many downright dangerous manoeuvres around me... he had his mates in the back and they were all having a good old laugh. Very funny until they cause an accident. I slowed up to let him get ahead in front and he sped away.

I know your probably not interested but just thought I would post as its sort of related to this topic.
Anyone had any similar experiences?
