I give up

Honestly, I really hate everything about relying on other people, especially businesses to do stuff. They can never seem to do anything right and is one of the reasons i NEVER take my car to garages.

Last week I took the head off my car to get 16 new guides fitted and new stem seals. Took it to a local place who had said they would have no probs doing it, explained why I wanted standard guides rather than the 'race' guides i have now.

Yet they then ring up saying they can't get them out without machining them flat to drive them out and so labour costs are gonna be high due to jigging the head 16 times, they said it would be about 300-350. No probs i thought at the time, however it seemed they made a lot of work for themselves after speaking to others as you should be able to do it anyway.

The head is ready today, they have done all the work yet havent changed 6 of the 8 inlet guides. The 6 left are still ok so don't need changing. However i now have a problem, the two guides replace in are not flowed and so I can see this causing me problems as which ever cylinder they have changed the inlets on is gonna get less air, maybe meaning the other 3 will end up running lean.

Plus the fact I was quoted for the fitting of 16 guides not 12. I even supplied 48 stem seals that they could use ( 32 of one kind and 16 of another, yet they still claim to have to have used more)

Why can you never seem to trust anywhere, gonna pick it up later and no doubt they have took chunks out the ports or something.

old pic 'Race' guides, No flat to drive against and so the tool was jamming inside the head apparently. Seems like they couldn't think of making a 'matching' extraction tool

Surely you have some comeback against them m8?.

If the job hasn't been done properly as per their initial quote?.

Ill see what they say later, it's not really my fault they can't get them out and they have only really done half the job i asked for :(

:/

Sounds like a classic "yeah mate we can do that" then actually it turns out they've not a clue.

Totally with you on relying on businesses - I find it hard to trust companies to do stuff properly - with perfectly good reasons half the time too. I can't even have new tyres put on without having to stand and watch their every move. I once caught a guy trying to jack my scoob up on the rear diff.

Anyway - this guy - you'll just have to talk to them and politely remind them that the work you wanted done hasn't materialised so you need to agree a fresh price.

Yeah best Idea I think, no point getting into an arguement over it, and wasn't really getting my point across on the phone.

Messed about being lazy on my car for long enough, now I know that my 75mile commute is near an end due to a new job (and moving to reading) so i wanna get it to full potential before moving on to something else.
I'm missing the effortless drive it provides thats for sure

Well yeah, you need to shift it mechanically perfect.

Something Japanese next?
No idea to be honest. Looked at loads of cars though, S2k would be nice but insurance isn't that great.

I could just drive the Rover till it dies. It's so much fun :p

keep it mate, if you still enjoy it then selling could be a big mistake. :)

Damn shame. Jobs like this should really only be entrusted to workshops that have reputable skill in this area (well, I'm assuming this one doesn't advocate to, anyway.....).

They always manage to **** something up. Hope they haven't gouged chunks out of the inlet tract!

I'm sure you'll get it sorted anyway :)

If it was in mint condition I would I think. It still looks pretty good considering its a 17year old design and drives nice. Just age and 160k miles have taken its toll. Your right though I will prob miss it, afterall I have had it 5 years.

Went to the head place earlier and sorted it out, hes agreed to modify the inlets to all match. To be fair they have done a damn good job on it. It looks brand new! Maybe i jumped the gun a little

New front bumper, bit of arch work and it'll be like new! The paint work looked in very good condition. I certainly couldn't see any defects.

Nothing to stop a car lasting as long as you want it to IMO.

Re the thread... glad you're getting it sorted out. So, when the head's back on, the engine will be running pretty much spot on? Bet you're looking forward to driving it without having to worry about suffocating the old dear behind you eh? :p

All it needs is a bumper repair and maybe a lick of paint to sort the stone chips.

Well that and a few helping hands to get the school girls telephone numbers out the boot. :o

When it's on it shouldn't smoke anymore, nor burn oil. Got some Silkolene to go in it, although maybe I will get in trouble for that though as in September I will be working for BP at the Global Castrol technology Centre. :o

Yeah I guess.

Well I threw them away the other week :( Were you after one then? :p Had a few 17 years old on the list

Fitted the head and its improved the smoking, however it still smokes a bit even after 300miles of driving

I think the turbo seal might be on way out. So tomorrow I will be changing the turbo in a hope to find the problem.

Damn Si, glad everything kinda worked out - Know what u mean about trusting others though, I only trust one guy (and he's 75 miles from me!) but I'm getting him to do my engine rebuild. Should be done by next week :D

I'd keep the Rover m8, at least for this Summer - I love sleepers :D
