Hey, wow, so just got back from work last night (4 hours shift) to find my flat had been broken into, door ajar, I walked in to find the alarm box ripped off the wall, cable inside the wall torn out and a giant hole where the wires had been pulled off, Dark mud prints on my rug . . . . Amazingly, Nothign has been taken, or even moved.....maybe they got scared off or something either way iI called police and gave statement etc etc.

Just made me think, if they had taken my computer and External Hard drive, i would have lost all my work from the past few years at uni (I do graphic design), aswell as photos. I would have been royally screwed in terms of portfolio work and would have nexxt to nothing apart from a few printed boards to show for the past few years, so Ive decided to burn all my owrk to disc and send it back home to sheffield ha ha, just to be safe.

Wow, cant believe how much worse it could have been, and still cant get over how strange it is that they didnt take anything, not even the spare change on my coffee table but did rummage through a tesco bag which had all my 1pennies and 2pennies in it....

Landlord got me a new alarm fitted today, feels weird being here knowing someone out there knows exactly what is in my flat and that they could come back for it anytime they want, especially when I'm out at work next.

Turned out that the back door to the block was left open by someone, thats how they got in and just forced my front door open (only had yale lock on and not the lower mortise lock).

Ironically a few weeks ago i downloaded motion detection software for my vista sidebar and my logitech webcam which records onto the hard drive if there is any movement in the direction its facing........if I had enabled it when I went to work I would have the sucker on video. Gutted. Will be making sure that is on all the time I go to work now though. (Altho not much use if they take my tower :P)

Any tips on making your home more secure/safer/harder to get into etc. Feeling a bit shook up. Cant wait to move out of here come May

Unlucky. Shows the need for backups! :) Be glad they didn't take any of your stuff and that it's given you the chance to save everything in case it happens again...

Why download it if you don't use it =s

Looks like you had a good lesson taught, with regards to backing stuff up though =]

It sounds like they were fedup with the noise of your alarm, so fixed the problem for you. :p

Our house was burgled years ago, we decided to get a dog. However our dog stands about 4 inches from the ground and could be easily dropkicked out the window. I would like to suggest NOT getting a dachshund as a guard dog. We now have a security alarm and the dog is just a novelty :p

Sorry to hear that, I'd be distraught if that was me and I'd probably end up moving or getting a pretty sizeable rotweiler.

A mate and I bought 160gb disks that we swap once a month and backup our stuff to, then swap back. That way, if anything ever happens to either of us we've got an offsite backup to restore from.

Sounds like a lot of hassle, but if your house burns it all goes and if it gets robbed properly chances are they'll take it all. DVDs aren't practical, maybe when HD/BR kicks off properly I'll change tack but for now this seems to work.

Interesting idea. Doesn't work for private files though! :p

well atleast you didnt have to learn too hard, glad nothing was taken or damaged as in workwise, its horrible being burgled, my brother got burgled but glady he knows who it is
