so I open up my shiny new copy of left for dead

tear of the selphane

start install

Duplicate product code

Anybody got any experance of this situtation?

Will steam support sort this out or is it a back to shop job:( & try to explain to clueless staff how pc games work

Isn't that impossible? Every Key is unique, and if it was still sealed?

You could try Steam. I remember years ago Steam requested a photo of your product, with the CD in the photo, if you needed help with this kind of thing. Or something like that.

I'd just take it back to the shop and simply say it doesnt work, though.

was in the 3 letter highstreet store yesterday and saw a couple of people bringing it back because of that

I had a dodgey code once where you couldn't tell what the numbers/letters were, You know the score * Ii1O0*. I just backed it to my local shop, Nowadays I open the case before I leave the shop & check the code out making sure it is readable.
Nowt you could check so unlucky, In your case I would just take it back to the shop, This is where building a relationship with your Local shop comes into it's own. Every now & then I have an issue & my Local Always sorts me out, I don't mind paying the extra couple of quid as they give me Instant good service & I'm not left waiting for the postal system.

Urggh i had the same problem with my copy of L4D yesterday.
Opened up a support request for the key to be transferred to me yesterday.
No response yet but i doubt they work saturdays.

Stupid damn pirates ruining it for everyone else.

Probably no need to worry. This is the first time i've had this problem with Steam.
With all the retail copies that have been sold, only having 2 on here is pretty good!

There's a good chance someone has used a keygen that has produced a code identical to his.

I don't think so, release groups often tag the cd keys with some initials if created by their keygen...

Eg. for some games, using Reloaded's keygen, makes the 3 letters ''RLD'' stay in 1 place of the key, in all keys created by that keygen... Due to this it's very unlikely the key will actually be a legit key... Dev's could easily just know that such a tagged key is not a legit one, and simply not include em in their games.

This has happened to one of my friends on Friday too!! He bought the game from a well known high street retailer for games, music, dvd, etc and came home and gets the same error message.

He hasn't taken it back yet because he has raised a support ticket to Steam but he won't get a response until this week if he is lucky due to this happening to so many others (it seems).

I would have gone straight back to the store next day and got a new copy if I it was me personally.

Don't suppose anyone has had any news from Steam yet? Wonder how long it takes...

"Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue. We are aware of the problem and are currently working on a fix for it.

We will notify you through this ticket once this is solved."

I WANT IT SOLVED NOW!

a lot of people are saying take it back to the shop

but how do you know the replacement copy wont give you the same problem

maybe its not the code at all any maybe its the steam servers
