Bit of a hijack, but does the boxed copy of L4D register the game against your steam account, or is it a standalone product?

It is permanently linked into your Steam account.
In fact, you don't even need to install from the retail DVD, just feed the retail serial number into the "Activate a Product on Steam" button and it will download L4D from Steam without ever needing the DVD.
