its driving me to dispair

asus kn8-e/x1800xt/freezer64/jeantech Phong

i have tried to take out each part or stop each fan in turn but its just loud make me feel sick now it has annoyed me so much i really feel like dumping it.

i think the main culprits are mb+ x1800xt.

how quiet are the conroe set ups with a 8800gts ?

I have a conroe setup with everything watercooled. The only fans are those on my radiators and the psu. In this configuration the setup is virtually silent from 2' away.

However, before I attached all the waterblocks, I ran the system with air cooling. The C2D E6600 was running with stock cooling and was very very quiet. I am using the Leadtek 7900GS and that fan was very quiet. All in all, the whole setup was running with ver little noise.

All I can say is that the C2D E6600 with stock fan is the quietest stock HSF I have ever heard. Im not sure how loud the 8800 series of video cards are though. Dont forget to make sure that the motherboard you get has passive cooling on the south/north bridge.

Your aim should be to run with as few fans as possible and those fans that you do have should be big and run at low rpm.

don't bother with ambers, too much hassle. get the zalman F3 fans. I moved to them from ambers, and they are so much better, just as noisy at 12V, but push more air, and include a resistor cable to reduce the speed so they are actually silent.

The VF-900 is also a very nice and quiet air cooler, and is a doddle to fit on an X1800XT

I know i have a different graphics card, but i slapped an arctic cooler on it and now its hard to hear and keeps my temps slightly lower than stock - not bad for £15 IMO!

Also slapped a Zalman 9500 AM2 on my CPU and thats a lot quieter than the stock AMD cooler, although it is the loudest part in my PC lol

i too moved from akasa fans to zalmans but i have them hooked up to a fan controller so no need for the resistor cables that come with it ;)
