I am bad for collecting boxes. I carefully flat-pack the boxes (my A-level on origame helps here) and stow them in the attic. My reasoning is: I never know when I would need it and if I ever sell the item in question, it'd be nice to have its original box; or if ever I need a box for anything, i always have one with a funky design on it! etc.
I also collect things like old PC parts. When I first started upgrading my PC, I would keep the old kit "just incase the new stuff went wrong". Thing is, I have things like my old slot 1 Celeron 333MHz + mobo + ram sitting around doing nothing. The thing has over 6 years of dirt and stuff on it--time to chuck. I do try to take my old PC bits and make them into whole PCs (purchasing random needed parts from fleabay if necessary). This means that I don't get that feeling that it is going to waste.
Thats my problem: I hate things going to waste, then again, I hate being in a position of needing something and thinking to myself "ahh bugger! I wish I still had XYZ".
I had the same thoughts a few months back. I used to have a PS, I loved playing the games but then got bored with it (moved to FPS and strategy games on ze PC!). I sold it because I thought to myself "well I don't need this anymore!". Queue a few months back, i then thought "I'm bored....let's go and play some older games!" and couldn't. So, back onto fleabay, PSone + loadsa games for £30! Bargain!
With TVs, the way I see it is I've already paid for the thing, I may as well use it. If I don't use it as much/at all, I've always got it for a time when I can use it. I did that mistake with my original PS--thinking I was done with something and then selling it. In all honesty it wasn't worth selling. Paying over £300 when it first came out compared to selling it for less than £50 (+ all games and peripherals) a few years later--didn't really make it worth it to me.
Old DIY bits (from failed DIY projects etc) I seem to keep. My excuse is: "those bloody projects just grow and grow, must finish them one day!" Heck, I remember saying that in the 80s. Still haven't got around to it, but I know one day I will! That's good enough for me
