To Linux...

I now have Linux Ubuntu 10.10 on my netbook and starting to understand it more.
I also have Ultimate Linux 2.7 running on my desktop and it is soooooo smooth it is unreal.
Can't see myself using Vista (Dual Booted) any time soon :)

Will Adobe Photoshop work on Linux though as this is 1 of the programs I use most, and i'm guessing iTunes will work too right?

I'm not at home at the moment so can't try it out, but I had a lot of issues getting Opera installed, and it still isn't installed.

Also, what is virus protection like on Linux?

You can get Photoshop and iTunes to run in Wine, I think, but I'm not sure you can sync with an iPod Touch/iPhone that way. I could be wrong, but I only ever tried once and it didn't go down too well.

Glad to see that you're liking Linux, always positive to see people finding use and love for it. :)

It's just amazingly smooth but I cant see myself using 60% of the applications on there as I aint got a clue what they all are and kind of afraid of messing anything up and not knowining how to revert the changes :D

I also noticed it doesnt eat up my processes and is just a nice OS to use :D
Also installed the Cairo dock which is cool :)

Nice one!

Have you tried Shotwell for your photo editing?

One beauty of the OS is that if you do naff it up it does'nt take to much heart ache to reload it and start again. Back your /home directory up to save your personal data.

Answered your question in the other thread about Cairo Dock :)
(right click on it and select "manage themes")

have fun :)

Photoshop CS2 runs well under wine but afaik cs3, cs4 and cs5 won't work. The best solution would be to get virtual machine software like vmware and run a virtual windows install.

iTunes doesn't work I'm sure on that. Only old versions. Also Linux wasn't compatible with touches/iPhones last time I used it, may of improved now though.

My sister uses rhythmbox to keep her ipod up to date. I'd be tempted to ditch itunes and use that instead. The ipod support is very good.

EDIT - see http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/07/03/how-to-manage-your-ipod-using-rhythmbox-in-ubuntu/

Banshee and Amarok work with ipods too if you want to have a play with those.

If you arent happy with running photoshop in Wine then you could try Gimp. Its quite powerful. If you want a photoshop-like interface then try Gimpshop. Its Gimp with a photoshop-like interface.

As masterluke says, Rhythmbox will work fine with iPods and is essentially Linux's answer to iTunes.

Regarding Opera. I note that you said you had difficulty installing it. How are you trying to do it? Sounds like you're trying to get the Windows version installed or something?? Just go to Opera's site and download the .deb file for Ubuntu from their home page.

THIS is the 64 bit deb. THIS is the 32 bit deb. Both are the latest version of Opera.

Once you have it, double click it and follow the prompts to install. Easy. :)

You don't need virus protection in Linux. While there are a couple of exploits (for things like Flash and Java via a browser rather than the OS itself usually), and even one or two proof of concept trojans, you'd need to pretty much authorise their install. Just don't run as root (not an issue in Ubuntu), and keep backed up. If you get pwned by malware I'll personally come down to your house and reinstall everything for you (i.e. it won't happen). :p

Photoshop - runs under wine.
iTunes - use Rythmbox or Banshee
Anti-virus - you can run without one and get along better than on windows, but there are anti-viruses available including some free ones and a NOD32 beta which broke repo downloads and my MSP430 launchpad last time I tried it.

I'm sorry but why are you switching to Linux if two of the main applications you want do not run on it without fiddling to get a version for another OS working? This is something you should have looked at before deciding to try Linux ...

Good move,I only wish i could switch to Linux permanently,My choice would be Linux Mint x64bit (I suggest giving it a try).

Windows annoys me,But im a PC gamer...and cant be bothered with Dual boot and all that stuff.

The one thing that gripes me is back in the WoW beta days there was a Linux client. But they didn't carry on production of it, which is a bit poop.

I decided to reload Windows Vista and Linux and dual-boot it as I still need my Photoshop & iTunes :D

If this was/is on your desktop.. you should try loading Vista Fista into Virtualbox and running your Photoshop and iTunes apps through that instead and negate the need to dual boot :) While you have it dual booted ..try it and see :)
