Hmm, I'm a little confused.

So at the prompt to select where you want to install windows, you selected your c: partition, but you didn't format it first? It sounds like you have installed xp onto the same partition twice...
dont you have to create a new partition by deleting the old one then format then bung on windows

sorry it was confusing lol
anyway i figurded it out....
i was booting the cd within windows and not from start-up, so i couldn't delete the partition as it was needed to run system files for windows to stay running. so i changed the boot order in dos and booted from cd, went into the menu and deleted the partition. then i made a new partition of 12000mb (12GB) for windows (as in the manual someone in this thread posted a link to, thanks by the way) and it is formatting now. Now my only other question is the other part of the HDD that has not being formatted do i do that through windows? (right-click on the drive and click format?)
thanks for the help everyone :D

In windows click start > run > compmgmt.msc

This will bring up computer management. Go so disk management and right click on the drive you want to format and shoose the option from the list. You may need to "initiate" the drive first, this will be in the same right click menu. If the drive is already fromatted, it will appear in my computer.

12GB is a small partition, if you are planning on putting windows xp plus a few basic apps this is fine. Anything bigger like games etc, you will have to install these to the other partition. This is fine though, just need to remember to change the drive letter when installing. Hope this helps...

Ah, now you're getting somewhere! Personally, I would have made the c: partition bigger, you will have to install your games etc. to another partition. Some people prefer to do that anyway, so whatever floats your boat.

You can partition and format the remaining space from within windows (Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management).

*edit* beaten to it

OK, so it looks as though you are one the way to a fresh install now. To prevent this in future use this firewall: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

I have been using this for about 20 minutes. For a freeware app it looks pretty good and there have been a fair few reccommendations for it in this forum!
A bit dumbed down for my liking but it does the job.

For a basic user such as yourself, this should go down a treat and prevent this from happening again. Just remember to read what it says when it pops up and asks a question. I have heard of so many loose internet access when they block iexplore.exe (Internet Explorer). BUT, this firewall give the Program name (such as Internet Explorer) and file location (such as c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe).

*EDIT* By the way, installing apps to another partition is not a bad thing at all. It means you can wipe windows and use the games where you left off straight away. Only problems that can arise is when a program has stored settings in a registry file (stored in c:\windows\......) so this would be lost and require a re-install of that app. Games are generally fine though.

Did you have this software installed when you were infected?

Also, 192.168.1.2, this is the address given to the first PC to ever connect to the router (these can change over time but its pretty safe to say this is correct for the home network). Reason being, find the owner of the first PC to be connected to that router and chances are you have found the culprit.

Hope the above helps...

Should have spent your money on NOD32, IMO.

If you're running a wireless router, make sure it's WPA enabled. If you're running wireless and you don't need it - switch it off :)
