i have just installed ubuntu?

how do i set the pc up so that it will share the external hard drive i have plugged into it with my windows pc over the network?

There's a few options in this post.

when i try and share it it says this:

'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot share path /media/External as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own.
Ask the administrator to add the line "usershare owner only = false"
to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this.

I remember i had this before, i think it was right after samba was installed and a restart fixed it, although it could also be a permissions issue, there's a samba manager you can install which makes sharing folders and setting permissions fairly simple, sorry can't remember what you have to type in terminal to install it though.

Install Webmin

Then you can manage samba sharing through the browser, while working on XP machine to test if its worked
