Ok so im pretty much constantly trying to fix my network at home, not so much the internet sharing but the shared folders etc, i never seem to get it working for more than a day!

My current problem is i cannot connect to a computer using its name, i have to use the ip address. I also cannot browse the computers in the 'view workgroup computers' bit as 'i dont have permission', yes i ****** do!

Any ideas hwat i could be doing wrong? All computers are on XP Pro, i have disabled all the firewalls etc and everything is connected to a router.

Ok do this:

1) Make sure both machines have the same workgroup name
2) Make sure both admin accounts have same username and password
3) Disable simple file sharing

Now with those 3 things done browsing the machines should be no problem at all.

Thats how theyre running atm :(

I will try the suggestion of running the wizard, see where that gets me :)

Right i can ping the ip address of the other machine, however i cannot ping the computers name :S Not sure what this means.

I managed to solve it, after hours of trolling through the microsoft knowledgebase....3 ports, 137,138 and 139 which are all to do with NETBIOS. I just had to stop blocking them on my router and all was good, everything works fine now. Im just confused as to why they arent controlled by UPnP which would hav emade my life a whole lot easier!

Well it didnt work before and it does now, is there another way i could have solved it then cos obviously id rather not be open to the internet.

Thanks for reading the thread guys :)

So do you think changeing the primary DNS to my router and the secondary as an internet based DNS would help?
