I have troubles reading disks!

Hi! I have a NEC ND-6550A DVD +/- RW installed on my laptop. However, it "chooses" what disks it wants to read. So far, i've seen it has no trouble reading DVD movies. I can watch them via software like Power DVD or what ever. However, normal data CDs with installations on them the DVD reader would not read. It just spins up, then stops, spins up, then stops. I try to go to my computer to see if the disk is being read but it just shows the icon as normal as if nothing is in the drive!

Help me please! It's really frustrating!

It turns out the NEC drives are bad. Earlier models had troubles readings disks too. I think i'll flash it and see how it goes tomarrow.

yeah they do seem to have a high fail rate and that symptom is a sign its on its way out
