I have two computers and I want them to share an internet conection...

Unfortunately I needed it for tomorrow so I popped to a competitor and purchased one off the shelf. Have a fair suspicion I got ripped, but its an Netgear ADSL+Router, should do the trick

It would work but would have been easier if you bought the cable version as it is plug and play. That router should work but will be more work to setup as it is designed for ADSL.

Apparently my friend's modem is USB so I had to get modem+router

thanks for your help all

Well if you've bought an ADSL modem+router, he'll need to continue using his USB modem because a ADSL modem is totally different to a cable modem.

****socks! Now I'm going to have to put some shoes on a get the ****ing thing from the back of the car...

If I've been misadvised I curse my own network naievity

AOL? Which is ADSL (i.e. via a telephone line) which means you did buy the correct kit :) You replace the USB Modem with the router as it contains the modem.

What's the difference?

Don't AOL and... NTL (virgin media) use the same connection?

I haven't seen AOL using a cable modem myself. Do you know the make/model of the modem he is using now? Or just as quick to look at - does it have a phone line going in the back or coaxial cable? :)

Phone line I'm told. I think I have a co-ax into mine
