I know nothing about laptops

My friend is looking for a laptop and wants to spend $1000CDN max, (around £500). She will only be using it for surfing, emails, ms office and music like iTunes and possibly watching movies on. She really wants a 17" screen too. What would you suggest?

Make sure she visits a shop and has a good look at a 17", they are difficult to lug around a lot. I had an 17" inspiron and it is massive compared to my 15" xps m1530

If she deffo wants 17" you can pick up a dell inspiron 1720 with onboard gfx for 500ish. Has the benefit of dual hard drive bays if she wants to add more space in the future.

Yea ninjas pretty much bang on there mate, an inspiron would do the job fine.

I could recommend some more, but with you living in the U,S of A, they may not be available to you.
