Spent most of today putting together my new system. I chose the Athlon 64 6400+ Black Edition Dual Core 3.2GHz, and got it brand new for £95 (+ VAT).

Wow. This thing rocks.

16c constant temp, and XP is running like lightning.

If you don't want to overclock I seriously recommend this chip to everyone.

No not watercooling. I bought this cooler:

The thing is absolutely massive! Very very quiet. And like I say my temp in the BIOS shows 16c

I was thinking about upgrading to the 6400+ black edition but im not so sure now with the phenoms being out, is it really worth having 4 cores yet?

I probably wouldn't bother upgrading from a 5400+, but it's your call.

No, I personally don't think there is much point in a quad core system at present (for most users)

Hat off to ya man. I love AMD too, but considering I just bought an Intel for the 1st time in my life it seems after 8 years of brand loyalty, I've been wooed to the dark side.
Are you planning to overclock it at all? You should be able to hit 3.5 with that fairly easily.

I really like AMD, but if you're going to overclock then there's no doubt Intel is king at the moment.

For £95 you really cannot go wrong with this chip though. It's a bargain!

Clocked at 3.2GHz by default, and I won't be going any higher than that

16c is wrong. It's probably not even 16c ambient temp.

I watched the BIOS screen for 5 minutes when I first started the machine up

The CPU temp read as 16c. The CPU fan RPM varied between numbers, so I know it's working fine.

What's a good Windows app to see your CPU temp? I will load it now and see what it's at within Windows

I managed 26'C Idle on a 6000+ at stock with AC Freezer, so I guess it may be possible in a very cool room? A house with no central heating? Unlikely though.

I had an AC as well, and the Scythe makes it look like a toy.

It's only possible if the ambient temperature is below 16C and in reality probably less than 10C, so unless you're sitting outside, it's wrong.

Whatever dude. Say what you like this CPU was 16c when I switched it on, and remained so for as long as I was monitoring it.

I have like 3 case fans, and an incredible CPU cooler. It's very very cool within my case

16C in BIOS?? Was that just after your pc booted up? For proper temp measurement use core temp.

For the price you got it for it's a brilliant chip if you don't overclock, offering similar/better performance than similarly priced E6750.

I'll go and have another look now and write down all the temps. I've been running Windows for about 3 hours now (quite heavy load), so it will be interesting to see what it's at

Just because it says 16c doesn't mean that's the REAL temperature. Obviously it's not calibrated properly.

What do you mean not "calibrated"?

How do you calibrate a BIOS temp reader? Unless there's something faulty with the MB, it will show the true temp

Well I looked again just now and that same temp is now saying 21c

The motherboard is working fine.

When I stick my hand inside the case it feels real cold.

Well what's your ambient temp?

The BIOS has one reading and that's "Current CPU Temperature"

That's the one that says 21c (and before it said 16c)

The RPM monitor is constantly moving up and down

Just think about it - watch the weather on the TV - the max outside air temp today was about 14-15c in London. Your inside house temp is likely to be anything from 18-28c depending on how much you have your heating on.

So the actual temp of your processor cannot physically be 16c (ie colder than the air surrounding it) - the BIOS is simply giving you false information.

2. Inside my case is a lot cooler than outside. I have like 3 big fans blowing cool air through. Add to that the massive one on the Scythe

I have no doubt it's a lot cooler inside my case than out.

I wouldn't really worry about temps at all if you're not overclocking.
Just makes me wonder though, why the after market cooler if you're not going for an overclock?

Well the black edition doesn't come with a stock cooler so I had to pick something.

Having just had 2 bad experiences with ACs, I decided to go for something completely different.

The Scythe had a really good reputation, so I chose that

AdladUK, you can keep saying "it says 16c in the BIOS" but that'll never stop it from being inaccurate. Just check it via the programs that have been suggested/linked to.

Well the BIOS changed to 21c, so it's not like it's stuck on 16

Blow on your hand and it will make it feel cooler. I've no dount this is what Adlad means? The temps are probably higher in the case but just the fact you feel rushing air generated by the fans, makes you think it's a lot cooler when it isnt.
