I love the OCUK forums....but they are getting SO flakey these days.

Shown couple of people in the last week the ocuk forums, giving them an idea of why so many people like them so much.

It actually got a bit embarrassing.

Was like being on dial up once again.

Had to keep making excuses for the place..busy time....lots of people on....etc.

Basically this is one of the slowest sites I now visit on the web.

Now, I *know* the forum is free and I am grateful for that so no flaming me please.

Just kind of wondered if there was any recent news I had missed regarding a server/ bandwidth upgrade or anything.

There were various suggestions being made I believe?

Please reread my post, it negates the "standard" reply you posted there.

My post is hardly flaming ocuk and doesn't require the normal auto-immune response such a post would get on here.

they aren't that bad most of the time.

Although they aren't running as well as they used to when they were first upgraded from the last server


IIRC there are 3 main ways to solve the problem.
1: Buy a new server
2: Limit the number of users online at any one time (and kill search and unnecessary forum subsections)
3: Ban more people

1) Obviously a "good idea".......but I am not the one paying so I understand the dilemma there. LOL

2) Just.....no.....for SO many reasons. (Please don't kill search!)

3) I thought that policy was already being actioned?

Just went on that site to see what it was.

Does all seem pretty harmless.......

Perhaps it's the fact it is a forum and not just a normal web site?

OT: Fathers For Justice have officially disbanded now haven't they?

Not sure TBH.

I now keep the sig as a sign of "defiance" to unjust Family Law and systems, than to the actual organization.

All going a bit OT now though.

Although often denied, if only in silence, the forums are much a part of OcUK's success.

Many etailers have no forums or ones so sparse in membership as to render them useless.

The question must arise at some point.....

How important to Spie are these forums as a business stratagem.

As someone pointed out earlier, just how many forums do you visit that require payment?

Not many, if any.

But would I pay to keep this forum at a maintainable level of acceptable service?

Yes, dependant on amount.

These forums are important to myself and many others who frequent them regularly.

Spie, though it must be difficult to measure the benefits, or lack of resulting from the forums, there must be a strong business case for keeping them at a reasonable level of service if only because they represent your business as a whole.

I know OcUK has always played the "forums are not part of the shop" card, but the truth remains most people associate OcuK with its forums as much as its retail products.

My vote?

"We" both give a little.

Spie bears part (how little or how much is up to him) of a server/ bandwidth upgrade and "we" bear the other. Through opt in "premium membership" or such.

I believe a sizable portion of OcUK's membership would pay for additional privileges on the forum if priced correctly. It's all about "new", "better" etc. after all.

Isn't that what many parts of this forum are about?

Buying a new gfx card to run FEAR faster than a mate can......

Buying a new X2 just because it has the potential to beat a single core......
