Im a bit miffed by this, Earlier in the Year I overclocked my 2500k to 3.8ghz, My GFX card to 800/1200, then Scored 4600 in 3dmark 2011

Now today I ramped my CPU up to 4.2ghz and Im scoring lower.

Old score was...

Free Basic Edition

3DMark Score P4516
Graphics Score 4194
Physics Score 7674
Combined Score 4342
GraphicsTest1 21.71 FPS
GraphicsTest2 21.22 FPS
GraphicsTest3 26.11 FPS
GraphicsTest4 11.38 FPS
PhysicsTest 24.36 FPS
CombinedTest 20.2 FPS

2500k @ 3.8ghz
P67a - C45
MSI 5850 Frozr 850/1200

Todays was..

3DMark Score P4540
Graphics Score 4248
Physics Score 7256
Combined Score 4345
GraphicsTest1 22 FPS
GraphicsTest2 21 FPS
GraphicsTest3 26 FPS
GraphicsTest4 11 FPS
PhysicsTest23 FPS
CombinedTest20 FPS

2500k @ 4.2ghz
P67a - C45
MSI 5850 Frozr 850/1200

What the hell is up :( any Ideas?

The thing is, its the CPU that seems to be slower on the scores. The GFX card is performing as it did the first time round.

Its pretty weird. I think I need to reinstall bios again because I did it through MSI live update in windows and I actually think its made my PC worse :(

What is your physics score with stock speeds? I have the same processor and motherboard, and I only get 5000.

Btw, do you have single or dual channel RAM?

Hey mate Ill give it a go at stock speeds this afternoon If i get the chance.

As for it being Stable, yeah its fine. No issues. I play the Witcher 2 for hours on it without anything crashing.

Heat throttling? I dunno if that would engage as my temps only ever hit 70c at max load under OCCT linpack test.

you havn't convinced me its stable, sorry, try running prime 95 for a bit, I don't have witcher 2 but it can run some games at ridiculously unstable clocks.

I'm probably wrong but its worth trying just to eliminate it as a factor/ make sure you never have any micro-corruption

hope this helps

edit: and yer, check your temps...

Its currently set at 44x multi, Just passed IBT on High stress level with no issues. Temp hit 72c during that.

Is it worth going to maximum and attempting that?

Ill run Prime95 for a number of hours when I leave for work at 4pm today. Hopefully that will pass and I can check everything over again.

Ill set everything to stock now in Bios and check again for Ziiip

Thanks, the 2500k should score ~6600 in the physics test.

Something is weird with my system too, in Vantage my score can be anything between ~13600-17000 (17000 is the good score).

Maybe you should do a clean Windows reinstall?

Do you have the memory modules in the correct slots (same color)?

Yeah mate I have the memory running dual channel as intended. In aida64 benches it seems to score ok but still very randomly at times.

Other than change multipliers and voltage in BIOS should I have altered anything else at all?

I ran Prime 95 for 8hours 30minutes last night while I slept.

Settings were

Multi - 42x
Volts - 1.20v

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Edit. I upped it to 43x and ran prime again, Only lasted an hour before BSOD. So ive tweak voltage a little higher and Ill run it again this afternoon when I set out to work.

Bring up the start menu and type "msconfig" in the chat box. Then select "diagnostic startup" and restart. This way, only the really necessary programs will start. You wont be able to run 3DMark this way, but theres a crapload of other benchmars that run. My Cinebench score went from ~5.37 to 5.45 which is the normal score.

Here is a review with a lot of benchmarks. http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/39555-intel-sandy-bridge-core-i5-2500k-core-i7-2600k-processors-review-9.html

I suppose if you mess around in msconfig, you could be able to run 3DMark with a minimal amount of programs running, but I dont feel like playing with it.

Edit: after reboot, you can bring up the task manager and see if you can shut down any more service.

Bare in mind there is going to be some variance in the scores between each run and those scores in the first post aren't hugely different - you'd need 3 runs at each setting and take an average to be sure.

Was just going to post this, do 3-5 runs at each setting and take the averages out.

Right them down on a piece of paper.

It's entirely possible that the graphics card is throttling back, how did you test the GPU overclock?

If you run prime95, make sure it's the blend test. 8 hours is fine for normal users.

As Rroff said, bear in mind that there will be some variance, usually within the 2-4% margin of error.
