While I wait for a 3080 , I thought I’d have a go at water cooling my 2070 evga super with a ek vector rtx water block . The metal backplane was ‘difficult’ to say the least, to get off, the rest being straightforward. Apart from question over the thickness of the thermal pads I used I followed the ek instructions to the letter.

however on firing it up, the card wasn’t recognised. I reversed the process back to its original state, but still no joy. I happen to have another 2070 from Amazon on hand so was able to quickly prove its not the mother.

so what to do, apart from selling it for parts on eBay.

I assume if I dismantle it I should be able to see if it passes the MB test without anything on the board at all, switching it off before the OS kicks in. Could the thickness of the thermal pads (.5 instead of 1.mm ) cause it to fail?

any ideas ?

If the thermal pads are too thin they may not make contact with the cold plate and you may cook the chips, but I wouldn't expect that to show immediately.

Are you sure you haven't scratched the board - and thus cut a trace or damaged a chip - in some way?

@Quartz
That may well be the issue. As I say the metal backplate took considerable effort to get off. Any point in stripping it down again, or should I just flog it

cheers

Did you pull directly at the backplate to lift it off or did you wiggle it side to side to try and break some of the contact first? It's never advisable to pull directly as you're likely to rip components off or even dislodge them... afterally they're only held on by a small amount of solder.

Those EVGA pads were extremely sticky. I ran my GPU for a bit before trying to dismantle it and it was still a bit of an effort to take apart. I'm not sure what to suggest OP, but it's bad luck and feel for you especially given the lack of 30 series cards at the moment :(

Well, it’s only money :(. I’ll move to the 3080 instead. Perhaps leaving it alone with out water cooling :)

just put back together and test if its dead just rma to evga u got nothing to loose they might even upgrade u to a 3070
