All being well the saxo will be sold on Wednesday night, sadly I cannot afford the Clio 172 Cup I want yet without taking out finance which I am not willing to do at my age so I need to buy a car for about 6 months while I save up.

I was going to get a Saxo VTS or a 106 GTI but I was just browsing ebay when I came across this.

I've always liked them since they came out and they are fairly powerful being the 1.8vvc engine and have sorted handling with an lsd. And that example looks like about the best I will find - not seen one on a W plate before. I think it wouldn't drop much in value being this cheap already and only 800 were made. Obviously I would respray that hideous orange grill on it.

Feel free to laugh but some helpful advice on the matter wouldn't go amiss :p

You already know my thoughts on the subject. One of the few rovers I like, and has the novelty factor of not being common as sin (ala MG ZR 105+).

And its relatively quick to boot :) I say do it so long as the price remains low!

EDIT: DO NOT RESPRAY THE ORANGE GRILL! Its part of the car's and english motorsports heritage!

Nope, don't want debt at this age. I haven't got a stable enough job, and i would already be paying £170 a month insurance on one.

Yeah I get why they have done it, but it looks awful. Infact I'd go as far as saying it's the most hideous thing I've seen since the Fiat Multipla.

Then don't respray it, buy a 2nd hand original grille, so you can return it to full BRM glory when you come to sell it!

Can someone please explain that orange grill to me?! I dont get it, I thought it was because someone had been in a crash and not sprayed the replacement part yet.

Did you just ignore my post all about BMR racing cars and 50th anniversary?

EDIT: Hahaha triple owned :p

Try raising your eyes very slightly and look a few posts up... I know it's a huge amount of effort, but the answer is up there if you want it.

LOL Will, that made me laugh :D It's all part of british heritige. Like Paradigm said, the grille is to symbolise other british cars which sported the orange grille and the legendary 'BRM' letters.

Paul, like I said on MSN, if HGF doesn't bother you, then I'd definitely go for it. The 1.8 VVC bubbles are somewhat rapid, and will definitely suprise you with the handling.

I'm on my 3rd Rover and have never had any serious problems with any of them. This example looks like it's been very very well cared for and so should have had loads of work done to maintain its reliability. Just find out if the cambelt has been changed, as they do tend to need replacing around 60,000 miles.

El, I'm very suprised at you! I thought you'd be the first to mention the bad points of owning a Rover :)

There's one of these normally in one of the multi-storeys in uni. The grille looks odd, just doesn't look right, but the inside really looks good, i walked up to it expecting to see a dull grey cloth interior and was pleasantly surprised.

The red quilted leather around the gearstick and on the door cards, really does look good. In my opinion, the interior of the car makes it feel really special (even if there is still lots of standard black switchgear).

I'd do it, even if only for 6 months, i'm no rover fan, but i always take a look inside when i go near it.

Always liked the look of these cars, they're something a bit out of the ordinary, and supposed to be a good drive as well.

I personally love the front grille. I always like motorsport touches to cars, alluding to past history. The big gaping grilles on the new Audi range - paying homage to the Auto Union racers of the 1930s I personally think are great, even though most people I know think they look a little rubbish.
