I have now had lord knows how many attempts at overclocking my I7 920 D0 and every one has failed miserably. There are so many threads all over the place but despite following the many variations, none seem to work for me, hence the title of the thread. I have read that 4.00ghz should not be a problem, frankly 3.8 would do me for starters, but even that didn't work (neither did 3.6). I did read somewhere that there are minimal changes that have to be made to achieve these...yes please.

Any help from someone who has done this will really be appreciated. My specs are as follows just in case anyone has the same board.

CPU, Cooler and RAM are all in original post? Timings for RAM are stock (8-8-8-20) Case is Aopen Nouveaux, 680 watt PSU and GFX is Geforce GTS8800 (6403mb)

prt, did you make nay other adjustments or just vcore?

Well I have it running at 4.00, I left QPT/VII voltage as auto. My big problem seems to be cooling. Currently sitting at 55 on average. If I run prime..bang right up to 100 which is a bit of a worry as I was told this cooler would easily do the job. Whats odd is when I check CPUID the multiplier shows 12 not 20 and speed seems to hover around 2440, not 4000, so now I am even more confused
 
Vcore in CPUID is showing 1.248. Airflow should be okay, there is a fan at the front and back, plus it has a glass side with a round Ventilation port there. Initially I spread the thermal paste but that wasn't too clever. So I had a look around and had a go at just putting a line as per the instructions. At the moment CPUID is showing speed of 4200.41 MHZ , I only really want to go to 4000 MHz but whatever I do it keeps putting the multiplier @ 21 ?? temps are 57 57 53 57. Not doing a fat lot apart from this, is that normal?
 
Thats what I have done, in fact my settings are exactly the same as yours (following the gigabyte procedure, so Voltages are not the issue, after I saw your screenshots I realised I had the same and everything boots okay. Now been running (albeit not with Prime as that pushes Temps up at 100% more or less straight away, which makes me think heatsink?) Not really sure what acceptable temps are while working, i.e 3ds Max at the moment and internet, temps hardly moving from avg 52 CPU at 4ghz
 
The heatsink is a Asus Triton 81 which is supposed to have a 4 way throughput, pulls from front and out back, they are 92mm fans, also have a fan at the front of the case and large 120mm fan at he back. I did have it running all day yesterday at 4.00ghz, with Internet, Photoshop CS3 and 3DsMax running, average temps were about 54.

By the way, should hyperthreading be left on?
