Getting a new hd next week and will install Win7 to it, but just to make sure...
Can I pull my old hd and install Win7 as a fresh op and if things don't go well, put the other hd back in to get back to xp? I'm not sure about having a dual boot as yet and the hd being replaced is my old pata 320gig for a 1TB sata2.

Be nice

TY

No you're not.
I've been on Win 7 for a long time but a month ago I put XP back on.
I have had nothing but problems with 4 different installs of Win 7 (some documented on here) so went back to XP where I have no problems.

Simple Anwser: Yes

Longer version: After installing windows 7 you can plug in the other HDD as well then if you ever want to boot from xp you just select the hard drive from the bios menu on start up

I do enjoy xp, but with support gone and I enjoy my games so I guess I will keep both.

TY to all

I still use XP to play DX9 games, it's just much better and always yields better fps ... I enjoy Windows 7 for what it has to offer too. When I have a behemoth rig I'll not give the latest OS a second thought but until then, I'll gain from wherever I can :)

I reckon it's down to my motherboard and processor and I did update latest BIOS and every driver going.
Quick list of faults -

1) Every zip, exe or rar I downloaded from the net with 4 different browsers and virus programs off, would be corrupt.
2) Blue screens of death
3) The worst video playback you can imagine.
4) Every window would turn over like a leaf from the bottom right.

There's several more but XP fixed it.
Win 7 works fine on my Q6600 system.

Win 7 is more sensitive to hardware failure. If your hardware is about to break then Win 7 throws a lot of BSOD at you as a warning but with XP it ignores them. Until you get one major BSOD and XP fails to boot anymore.
By the looks of your first 3 problems I would run memtest on that system to check the RAM.

I'm still on XP. Been meaning to reformat and swap for like nearly 2 years! Haevn't got round to it. Win 7 has a couple of bugs that really grind my gears though that microsoft won't fix. The read only one, where folders and files randomly become read only, and the one where the windows explorer window will not automatically refresh after a delete/move/rename etc. They both hack me off so much in a work environment running win 7.

Windows 7 and dont look back.

You can keep your windows XP disk as you said, just disconnect it when installing 7.

I would not go for a dual boot but use your XP licence in a VM (virtual machine) you can then have the best of both worlds. You would need to reinstall everything into the VM though.

Windows XP and 7 do not play nicely together with restore points, google for fixes. This should not be a problem for the VM though.

Keep the windows XP Hdd as a backup in case you want to use it on its own.

I've never had this problem and I've been using Win 7 since release:confused:

I used to dual boot XP and vista, after about 3 weeks I used Vista exclusivly and all was well! I have XP on my laptop and my laser curtters pc, this is for software compatibility, as windows 7 is excellent, but no good with legacy software.

I dual boot Windows 7 64 bit HP with XP Pro (32 bit) as occasionally I run into compatability issues in 7, xp is very very quick as well and on older systems it's generally a better idea to stick with xp.

However I usually boot into Windows 7 as it is nicer to use, excepot for the "Your computer is performing slow, disable Aero?" which pops up every time I load up BC2 or MOH interrupting my gameplay and not allowing me to turn it off, as my computer is always running fine! :(

personally speaking I'd never go back to XP now...Win 7 has been flawless for me on about 30 setups and is so much nicer to use on a day to day basis...

I had something similar on XP. Never really got to the bottom of it. I tried different disks, browsers, firewalls, AVs, network cards. I even suspected it was my router or ISP at one point.

A new machine with Windows 7 doesn't have this issue.

Good old XP, for me Win7 does nothing better except DX11,advance format drives and HD in the media center....keep that old harddrive close at hand ;)

Even though I had Win 7 on for over a year nobody who called round would believe it was installed because I'd got it looking exactly like my XP setup anyway.
I can't do with all the poncy stuff so turn all classic views on.
I'm now back on XP and everything is running smoother & faster.

Might be faster but it's way less secure and driver updates are gonna stop soon...
Enjoy it whilst you can, you won't be able to have the latest browsers etc. soon even, because vendors are phasing out support for XP. I can't see why you would want to go back to a nearly decade old OS, and something that is, to be brutally honest about 8 years out of date...

Why do I need the latest greatest browser?
Why would I need to update drivers that are already working?
I grew out of the 'I've got to be the first on the block' years ago and as long as XP downloads from Newsgroups, plays my films, gets OCUK up on the screen and a few other things then I have no need for anything 'better'.
