Tuesday i went to Shrewsbury hospital for my eye tests - came out and looked for parking payment and they were covered over so we thought they were out of order - After driving round hospital car parks we came to the conclusion the new little grey boxes were pay machines - sure enough -looked at screen and saw "Apps" - I don't have any so went and looked for another - It was the same but the screen was live so payed and off we went.
Today got a text for a parking fine payment - pay in 20 days or you will pay more.
Did a load of checking and came to the conclusion it's spam due to what I read on official web site.
Read text again and the composition of the message was a bit off;
How did they know I went to the hospital two days ago.??

Probably just coincidence, I also got a text today about a parking fine payment to a phone number that isn't, never has been and never will be associated to a car I own or drive.

Fire it out to enough numbers and you're bound to catch people who will have been in a car park somewhere recently.

Same as scam delivery texts - fire out loads, you're bound to catch people who are expecting a delivery because loads of people always are.

The local Telford Facebook groups are full of posts about these texts. Ask yourself how did they get your mobile number from your numberplate, it's not something the DVLA ask for.

It's a scam.

They just send the spam out in huge numbers, and statistically there is a high chance that if it reaches a driver that person may have parked in a pay and display parking spot at some point in the last week.

Basically it's a numbers game, they are betting that if they send enough of the spam they'll get someone who'll panic, not think about it and pay.
It's the same method for the various "you need to reschedule your delivery" or "your delivery is on hold due to lack of postage, pay or we'll return it" scams, or the HMRC, "bank security", "Amazon" and "Microsoft technical support" ones :).

Thanks all - - words like "you'll " rather than you will - too many "payment" words.

I nearly got caught because of the confusion in not knowing they had updated the parking ticket machines.

Had a email back today from Council saying it is definately a scam - If you do have a penalty they send them by post not email or text -but might stick it on your car in street.
Good job I didn't click the link. - I always google now.
