Get a slightly bigger piece of baton and plane it down. You'll get a better finish that way. If you want a nicer piece of wood than B&Q cheapo pine and assuming the piece you need is quite short then have a look on ebay for pen blanks.

This guy is decent seller for craft timber supplies. He will cut it to the size you want if you email him. I get English Walnut blanks from him for pistol grips from time to time.

Go to the nearest joinery/cabinet workshop, they'd plane a bit up in seconds and probably give it to you for free.

Depending on the type of timber, a joinery workshop would likely give you that for nothing if it was something like a piece of softwood and not overly long. It would only take a minute to lift an offcut and stick it through a thicknesser for you. We throw stuff like that out all the time or bring it home for fire lighters so a joinery workshop would be your best bet.
