I need a glue which doesn't shrink! (Also, laser stuff!)

Hey,

I'm preparing to make a model (architectural) and I need a glue which won't warp plywood.

It's a contour model of a part of a city, and we're lasering out 3mm plywood, stacking it and glueing. Problem is, past experience has shown that normal wood glue tends to warp it, regardless of glueing it down on a thick MDF base or anything else solid.

Some layers could be screwed, and the glue could also be dabbed on rather than spread over a whole sheet, but would still like to find out if there's anything out there that's purposefully for laminating sheet material together without shrinkage.

Help!

p.s. I appreciate this is probably the wrong forum to ask but you never know:) (Pinter75?!?!)

A few shots of the CAD file I'm preparing for anyone interested...

Section of Istanbul we're making, 2100x550mm in 3 panels. I had to trace round all the buildings:(

I don't know if that's really boring or not... I've been working on it for days and it's all I see... :D

Will you be clamping the ply together? Do you have access to a veneer press? That would be the best solution.

Glue wise, i'd say Urea-formaldehyde would be best, its whats used in making the ply/mdf.

Clampings not really feasible, there will be so many little bits. The larger areas of ply can be weighted down though and left to dry overnight, rather than glueing the whole model in one go and coming back in the morning to find it's all bent out of shape.

Will do some googling on your glue suggestion:) ta

u always clamp when you use glue and wood. or 99 percent of time.

maybe you could put something on top of piece like a extra piece of wood and use a rachet strap pull it down.

I think its called Extramite, its a powder based glue that you mix with water. Its a very strong resin glue and is the glue they use to manufacture the pressed wood products, so should be up to the job.

The very small pieces you could use superglue and activator or rapid epoxy.

few blobs of woodglue and some weight ontop, maybe a few long screws and done. not like your going to be swinging it round

in my experience, thick-gell cyanoacrylate works quite well with thin plywood as long as it doesn't need to flex, otherwise the gluebond will simply crack.

if it needs to flex then you might be better off with a vinyl-based contact adhesive.

Some kind of contact adhesive. a thin smear on both pieces, wait until it goes off then press together. Just make sure you get it positioned right first time!!

Forgot about this, so here's an update for anyone interested!

Got to this stage a couple of weeks ago. Still need to do bridge at bottom left and build up a few of the buildings further.

Pretty pleased with it. Each panel is 700x550mm, they fit together pretty well. I've used 3mm acrylic as the first layer to show the water.

Just PVA:) Dabbed it on at 5cm (ish) intervals so any contractions/expansions would be localised and not across the entire layer causing it to warp. There are a few screws too.
