a good one, that will support mainly pci e, but agp aswell, so i can use the following untill i buy the 8800 a month later.......

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)

OcUK Value 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory Dual Channel Kit

Geforce4 Ti4600

WD 8mb cache hdd IDE

possible ?

Or i can get a nice msi mboard and get a cheap pci-e graphics card however will it be better than a ti4600 ?

there arnt many agp and pci e boards about personally i wouldnt bother. cant you hang on till you get the gfx and just buy a pci-e board ??? i would say all pci-e cards will be better then a ti4600

i just noticed you have listed ddr memory, you will need ddr2 memory for the conroe system i think.

Yes it is very possible.

ASRock 775Dual-VSTA is the board of choice, and a bonus is its cheap too (sub £40).

A rather large and very informative thread is in this very forum and few posts down.

That board won't run an 8800, the 8800 requires a 16 lane pci-e slot, which this board does not have, as a stop gap though, the board is fine. Just don't plan to stick an 8800 in there. No sata2 amongst other things, just remember it is a budget board, and you get what you pay for.

You know what, I actualy read it as though the board was required as the stop gap - and would be replaced too.

the SATA2 is'nt an issue anyway since he only has an IDE HD.

The only thing I can recomend without you having to shell out a lot of money to just get the 8800, is consider a used top end Dx9 card.

X1900XTX can be picked up for £170 now.

it might be prudent of you to go with the Asrock board, and buy a slightly lower spec DX9 card, say 7800GTX(can be picked up used for around £100).

Save your money, as the prices of the 8800's will fall. then go for a new board, memory and the 8800 when you can afford it all.

Lastly, bite the bullet and do the complete upgrade now (DDR2, mainboard, 8800).
