Sat at home in my pants
My 520 Hiper died last night and i need a new PSU. Was looking at antec, is the phantom worth 40-50 quid more than the normal 550W? Seems a bit excessive to me.

Are enermax still any good?

I've been away from the scene for a bit so any suggestions would really help thanks!

I chose a 580W hiper because it can handle my system and is cheaper than the others... the Enermax Noisetaker 600W and the FSP Sparkle 600W

Seasonic and Tagan are also top notch. As I always say - get the best you can afford and you wont go wrong :)

Do you really need 550W - http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp?? :D

If not, then I recommend any of these:
  • Tagan TG430-U15 430W ATX2.01 Easycon SLi Compliant Modular Silent PSU (CA-007-TG) £46.95
  • FSP Sparkle AX500-A Blue Storm 500W ATX2.0 PSU (CA-005-SK) £49.95
  • Seasonic S12 430W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply (CA-000-SS) £44.95
  • Enermax Noisetaker 485W EG495AX-VE(G) SFMA ATX2.0 PSU (CA-007-EN) £49.95

Hehe 257W apparently! Thing is i will be upgrading soon and i want a beefy PSU i dont want to have to buy another down the line.

Am going for the 580W tagan i any thoughts?

Good choice! Even the lesser versions will be ok but I guess you could call this one future proof if you want to crossfire/sli down the line. But for your current spec in rig, it's overkill for sure.

wicked job done, now am just praying that nothing else has been fried or it is going to be an expensive week!!! luckily the world cup is on or i would be bored to tears without my pc :D

cheers for the help

The way things have been going lately, power consumption seems to be reducing (in some areas e.g. CPU), so what you think is beefy might be OTT. What might kick you in the 'you know what' ;) is if they change standards again (e.g. ATX 2.0, split +12v RAILS, etc) making your 'beefy' PSU seem useless to carry over to another upgrade. Note: this is pure speculation, so if you can afford the Tagan 580 then go for it because its from a very good/reputable brand

oh well too late now ive ordered anyway! 91 quid with shipping  then again i can set it against my tax bill for next year ;) yes mr taxman i really need a water cooled sli dual core setup to run excel! :D

I just replaced my Hiper 580 with a Enermax 500W Liberty. Lovely PSU indeed, much quieter and actually tidier for me as you get 2 old and 2 Sata sockets per cable. I only use 3 leads comparied to 5 on the Hiper for the same number of components

the Enermax comes with PSU fan monitor which the Hiper desn't, it's not really that important but with Asus probe I can now monitor the fan speed where i couldn't before.

I do miss the blue light thou, but meh, the Enermax is a better PSU. That said, there was noting actually wrong with the Hiper, it has given me a year of solid service, really good rails (if anything, a little strong) actually with no drop outs what so ever.

The enermax (installed in the past 10 mins), has much tighter rails. doesn't have the rear 80mm fan so its quieter.
